"Your tv box needs an uograde "

The email I was sent had that sentence in the subject. We were sent a new remote. We 'upgraded'  We dont like it. We now find out the change was voluntary. The email made it sound like an essential mandatory change, due to saying it was 'needed' We feel tricked into changing. Please roll back or refresh my box to the pre 'upgrade ' version.

In the overwhelming majority of cases where a user has voluntarily requested a conversion from TiVo/V6 > TV360, the process is irreversible and once started, can't be stopped.

There will have been numerous changes made to your account as well as reformatting your box to install Horizon-software instead of TiVo. VM forum staff should be along in a couple of days to advise further, but - given their response to previous requests along the same lines - I wouldn't hold out much hope for them acceding to your request.

Much as I suspected, thank you. "Voluntarily requested" is not the case here. I was informed the upgrade was needed, and I acquiesced in the belief it was necessary and non - negotiable.

If the email had stated that I was being offered an optional change, I would have researched matters and probably declined.

      Thanks again for the reply.

  • You say there's no compulsion to upgrade, but VM sent an email saying my box needed an upgrade. Not an offer, a stated necessity. As said on my own thread, I'd have researched and declined. It was misrepresented as compulsory. Bad form.

Hey emailmisery, thank you for reaching out and we are sorry to hear you are not liking the new TV upgrade.

What are you not liking about this?

Once it has been changed over we are unable to change this back sorry.

  • Made to upgrade in the same way as me, I suspect.  An email saying the box "needs" and upgrade. No offer, no choice. A necessity. Misrepresentation.

It is a misrepresentation, and I binned the email. If it was a true and necessary 'upgrade', they'd just do it. They need your agreement as it wipes recordings. It is upgrading their profits as they are saving money on tivo licences,  this is probably what they mean.

I also got the email. The Oxford English Dictionary defines "need" as a verb meaning "To require (something) essential" which reads to me as something which has to happen. The email reads "...the Virgin TV box you currently have is using old software, which means you aren’t getting the most out of your services. The good news is, we can upgrade you to a new Virgin TV 360 box at no extra cost."

As regards Tivo licences, if you look at your contract under TV you will see "Tivo Monthly Fee" as well as "Virgin TV V6 Box powered by Tivo". Methinks the monthly fee is covering the licence charge. If correct, VM do not actually profit from converting users to 360 because they don't pay the fee - we do for them!

  • Rather than saying just a "We don't like it" message why not hi light the things you don't like and then if is there any feedback to the software developers they might be able to do something if there is no copyright enthriagment with TiVo software who might hold the patents.

Once you have changed there is no going back unless you are very lucky and it probably won't last for long (how long is a piece of string), when the Virgin TV network is updated to fibre and streaming only boxes available.

I am very happy with my V6 Tivo box. I have no interest in Disney or Paramount. I know someone who switched from an old Tivo box to 360 and is not happy about it. He thinks it relies on far too many icons which he finds unreadable. Given he was a Tivo user he should have been able to switch to a V6 Tivo instead of 360 for a one-off charge but no-one told him that at the time. I will stick with V6 Tivo until the end of cable. 360 shall not darken my door.

Does anyone know (forum staff?) what the timescale is for completion of the fibre network? On the assumption it will not all be done at the same time, when fibre installation is completed in a cabled area, will VM force users in that area onto their fibre-only solution and switch off cable distribution, or will both run in parallel?

You won't get any changes made to the 360 or streaming devices. They are standard products issued to Virginmedia in the UK and to other companies owned by the same US group.

They have been foisted on you, and you are stuck with them.

Bear in mind TiVo is not available from Sky either.

They're moving the same way as VM is - "online-centric" software, and streaming only. I'm not saying I agree with any of this direction of travel, but no UK pay-TV provider now proactively offers a recording solution to new customers. It's reactive or on-request only.

The EE TV Box Pro is described as "The UK’s only streaming box that can record live TV. Watch live and on-demand TV in 4K HDR quality with Dolby Atmos Sound."

  • As per the title, our v6 box was 'upgraded' to 360 due to an email saying our box needed an upgrade and telling us what to do. No element of choice was mentioned. We bitterly regret changing. Picture quality is worse and the whole layout is terrible.

But I'm here to collect numbers. If you have been told it was necessary rather than optional please respond in this thread.

It's not about 'getting used to it', I'm aware that japitts on here keeps saying it is entirely voluntary, but my experience shows otherwise. How many of us feel we've been pushed into the change, whether we like it or not?

    Over to you......

I think everybody with Tivo/V6 has been sent the email. Its very misleading, and makes it look compulsory.

If your box needed a update they'd just do it. They need your 'buy in' as it wipes recordings, and makes sure you have no come back as you've initiated the change.

And I will keep saying so, for as long as it is - I know I'm not the only VIP user who has posted in similar lines.

I also received the email in question, but chose not to respond to it.

You are a vip and are very familiar with VM and its ways. You made an informed choice.

The people posting here are innocent victims who simply trusted the email saying they "needed" an "upgrade".  Neither word was correct.

Pity VM didn't use the 'voluntary' or 'optional' words in their email. Many customers feel misled by  the 'your box needs an update' wording.

I also chose not to respond, but only because I was forewarned by other customers of the implications and functionality lost with the 360 downgrade. Most customers won't read or be aware of this forum.

As said before the basic functions of the box haven't changed which are watching live TV and recording, it's just the different features in the software that has changed.

I got the email today. I think that's the second time, might be the third. It still says the box needs an update. I binned it, I've seen this forum before.

Agreed, it's really poor to use 'need' when it's nothing of the sort. Also when you look through the FAQs you'll find no mention of 'do I need to upgrade' because they'd prefer you didn't ask that question 🙄. In short, no you don't need to upgrade, at least not yet. Such dodgy salesmanship.

  • Who's been merging threads? I started a separate thread for a head count, but it looks as if somebody deleted it and grafted into this one.

My sister has just received an upgrade email and hers doesn't state that she "needs" an upgrade.

She's happy with the 360 having used mine, but is actually thinking along the lines of switching to VM Stream boxes instead. She isn't that fussed on recordings and isn't opposed to catch up and on demand services, and having to skip adverts where possible.

I'm actually toying with the idea of getting a Stream box to either replace one of my two current main 360 boxes (for portability) or have a further additional box  in the kitchen.

    Each to their own.

      Hi Dave,

Have things changed, originally if you had a second 360 box, mini or main box the advice was cancelling your multiroom contract and waiting 30 days before asking for an additional stream/flex box, you couldn't just swap a mini for a stream box was the advice given by the forum team.

I know you can now ask for up to 4 additional stream boxes if you have a 360 and a mini box is it the same for 2 main boxes.

Why not just get a Firestick or AppleTV? A single payment rather than a sub, a wider choice of apps and a higher quality and faster box (if you go for the Apple option).

I use an Apple TV for the streaming I do (YouTube and the F1) and it works really well.

        Hi Tavis75

I have a firestick and a firetv cube and although they carry a greater range of apps they are unsuitable for my TV requirements.

Unlike yourself, I am perfectly happy with my VM services, especially the TV360 boxes. I am thinking about a VM Stream box for extra portability, no other reason.

The Amazon devices do not carry either the VM TVGo app, or the Sky Sports app which I need to watch all the channels that I subscribe to and enjoy watching.  Although not supported on Amazon devices I have managed to sideload those apps to the devices and they do work in a fashion (in other words not very well at all), along with additional support via a mousetoggle app. I realise I could also sideload illegal third party apps on those devices to watch content that can't be provided legally on these devices, but that's not my way of  doing things.

The VM TVGo app is available on AppleTV, however it's a cut down version and doesn't have the full selection of channels available on computers, or android and ios tablets and mobiles.

Plus I do not like Apple period (similar to you and VM's TV360)
