Why has NHK been removed?

I enjoyed watching the Sumo for many years on NHK, why have you removed it and can you get the sumo on TNT?

  • If your TV is connected to a terrestrial TV aerial and it has Freeview you will find NHK on channel 272, I believe the sumo is due to start 11th May.

  • I too demand an explanation for why you have removed this great channel, which has become my favourite recently.

What a hideous decision. What on earth are you thinking?

I don't have Freeview and yes I know they have a website.

You recently put up your prices - now this. What an insult and outrage.

Please reinstate it immediately. In these times of so much war and hate their programmes are often quite therapeutic.

Sadly, it’s part of the ongoing move from linear TV technology to online streaming, which is far less expensive for the channels owners.

NHK has not renewed its contract with VM to provide a linear TV service. It is still currently on Sky & Freesat, where I believe its current contracts still have several months to run, but I expect them to disappear soon. The Freeview service is provided via an internet portal, & there is a chance it might return as a FAST channel, but don’t count on it.

NHK has had financial issues since 2020, & has closed several of it’s domestic linear TV operations.

I remember when CNN left Virgin Media and people here were insisting it would leave Sky as soon as the contract expired but it never did (and, some years later, is now back on VM!)

Thanks very much nod for clarifying. Yet again, an assumption proves wrong. Seems quite impossible to stop making them. VM did us and themselves no favour however, in not offering the very sad explanation.

I'm sorry to hear of their troubles; if CNN's return was due to a change of fortune, I sure wish the same for NHK. Such a wonderful channel, I wish I'd realized I had it long ago. 'Cat's eye-view of Japan' popped up as a 'viewers also watched this' after a nature doc a while back and then I found it was only a taster of the therapeutic nature of so much of the channel. Let's hope it returns like CNN somehow.

  • Hey grahamc1, thank you for reaching out and a warm welcome to the community we are so sorry to hear this channel has been removed.

As mentioned we have no control over channels being removed however we do our best to replace this if possible.

NHK is (or was) one of our most watched channels and I've always checked it is included before renewing my contracts. It's still listed as being included in my TV package, but as others have found has disappeared. Why have Virgin not informed customers of this change? And what compensation will we be offered?

Channel closure notices were on-screen for NHK for a couple of weeks prior to its closure, and the EPG was listing "channel unavailable" from May 1st.

T&Cs do cover variations in channel provision.

Ch625 isn't listed on the current TV channel guide
