Removing old cable

The previous people living at my house were Virgin Media customers and there’s a long cable covered in green plastic running through my garden that I’d like to remove. I’m not a Virgin Media customer. Will Virgin Media remove it or am I ok to cut the cable myself and dispose of it? I tried calling them but got cut off and I can’t find an email address to ask.

  • Hi Pyramid55,

Thanks for taking the time to contact us via the Community. It's lovely having you on board with us in the Forums. ⭐

When the cables are installed, if the customer leaves Virgin Media, we wouldn't remove the cabling unless there is a health and safety risk. Even then, we would come out to make the cable safe, as opposed to removing it. This is to ensure the infrastructure remains in place to allow a future connection.

The cables are not live so feel free to cut the cable and remove this yourself. Just be aware that should you wish to take Virgin Media services in future, removing the cable could cause some lengthily delays to your installation date.

    Many thanks,

Post up some pic's of the problem on here if you think it is a H&S issue. VM may do something about it if it is, otherwise it is a DIY job.

VM are usually reluctant to remove the cable in case you or a later resident might want to use it, but a VM person may pick this up and offer to help.

If you can't get VM to assist with removing it and it doesn't lead on to another customer, it won't harm you to remove it back to your boundary.
