VM 360 uhd content "dull"

Not sure if this is a recent issue, unique to my setup or a common thing, but I have recently noticed that uhd content looks worse than hd content.

Uhd looks dull, dark and washed out in comparison to normal hd. This occurs on the F1 uhd channel most noticeably, to the point it is practically unwatchable.

My daughter last night pointed out to me that it also affects iPlayer uhd content and so far any uhd content I have tested run through the VM box looks awful, yet using the same apps via an Xbox (or other input) looks normal, so it's not the TV.

I've tested on the upstairs box and whilst the F1 uhd and hd channels looked like they've been swapped (the uhd looks like hd and vice versa). Iplayer and other content looks ok.

This would potentially suggest there is an issue with my box? I have done the usual trouble shooting, rebooting checking cables etc but nothing has changed, so something isn't happy and needs fixing please.

  • Perhaps state the make and model of your TV as it could need a settings change.

At work at the moment so can't remember, or check the exact model, but it's a 2022, midrange, hisense 50" HDR 4k tv.

I've run through all the settings I can think of, but made no difference, it is only on uhd content on certain services, (F1 uhd, iPlayer etc) as Disney+ looked ok on a brief check, but I need to do a more detailed look at the affected channels though.

If it was the TV, I would have assumed that the Xbox would have produced the same results? But iPlayer and the like all function perfectly on the same TV settings.

I was wondering if there is an issue with either the box itself or if there's a known issue with certain apps on the box when running uhd / HDR content?

  • I had a 2018 or 2019 Philips tv and had the same issue. After looking into it it was due to older tech ultimately. Changed my tv in 2024 and bingo loads brighter. It's not a tv setting as such it is the 'NITs' that determines how bright your tv can go with UHD/HDR content.

It wasn't as visible with Prime and Netflix but was the same for them also with darker parts of films was really bad.

I get what you're saying, but this issue only occurs through the virgin box and not other inputs (Xbox, built in apps etc), as the uhd content is only poor through the box, so can't see it being the TV? If that makes sense?

I need to do some more testing when I get home next, but was putting it out here looking for solutions I may not have considered or confirmation of a box issue.

Hey Vengeanceuk, try swapping your HDMI cables around. I found that not all my HDMI inputs on TV support UHD. I had the same issue and swapping the input worked.
