U channels

I saw the notice about "U" channels access changing (why?) and did the registering thing successfully. However, if I click the 'app' the screen goes black nothing doing. What is occurring?

  • Hi AS

Thanks for posting and welcome back to the Community.

The closure of the On Demand channels is because it's all going to the app itself.

How is your TV box connected to the Internet please? Are you having the issue with any other apps?

Also means that you'll get adverts which you could FF through with on-demand

Thank you. I seem to have implemented the changes before Virgin did and all is now okay. I suspected they had been forced on us by U to mean we had to watch the interminable adverts. I mean you could go to the shops during the ad breaks. I see 1701 tells us we can FF - let's hope so!

They're saying you were able to FF adverts with the on demand system, but can't with the app.

Let me explain what's going on. U&Dave, U&Drama, U&W and U&Yesterday will no longer be available on Catch-Up, so you'll have to go to the U app to do this. But why no change to the other channels, i.e. U&Alibi, U&Gold and U&Eden? Answer: these are subscription-based, often bundled with Pay TV package whereas the others are free-to-air.

So will U lose by removing the FTA channels from Catch-Up? Probably not as VM is selling the advertising slots and sharing the revenue with U, now U will keep all ad revenue from its app.

Finally you may ask why is U keeping all seven linear channels. The answer is that these channels bring in ad revenue, VM pays to host them and they are a valuable means as a shop window to promote its Catch-Up content and attract viewers to its U app.

  • We can still watch  the U channels on our tivo box, but are unable to get on demand, we did record a lot of U progammes, is it because tivo boxes are outdated or is it our  tv

Tivo boxes (not V6 or newer) don't have the app, so lose on demand for the free U& channels. A bit like iplayer, and of course the U& channels are  BBC owned.

  • So if I decided to upgrade to 360, there would be app for the U channels which I can mnot get on demand now, we record quite a bit on demand, its only the certain U channels we can't, my wife likes to record the U progs , haven't tried yet I suppose it won't work on catch up?

I think there are two things here.

If you have the TIVO, V6, or 360 boxes, you will still be able to record these channels as you do today. No change.

What you won't be able to do on the TIVO is watch them on catch-up as it doesn't have the app which replaces catch-up / on-demand.

A recent announcement told viewers that U channels would be diaappearing from the channel guide and should be accessed from the menu. There are indeed on the VM menu, and on my smart TV apps, but they remain on the channel guide (and thus recordable). So it''s all fine I am just puzzled.

      What recent announcement is this?

I believe the announcement was regarding the changes uktv made in July when they rebranded to 'U'.

There was no mention of channels disappearing from the channel guide however customers on VM's older V6 boxes would no longer be able to access UKTV’s catch-up content by clicking on the EPG interface, instead they would need to access that content by using the 'U' app or via On Demand?

        Update:-

There was no mention of channels disappearing from the channel guide, however the On Demand service for U (UKTV) which used to be accessable via the EPG on the V6 boxes closed.  Instead customers now access the catchup/on demand services via the U app.
