Software update 5.22

My 360 boxes updated overnight to version 5.22.  There's no additional info showing about the update, just the usual "we've quashed some bugs etc"

Glancing through the Settings there are no changes showing, also I can't see any changes when looking through the shortcuts on the Home screen navigational menu.

The only actual changes I've noticed are that although still showing under the Apps > All Apps section that a few apps are temporarily unavailable when clicking on them.   The apps in question are :- Al Jazeera,  Deutsche Welle, and France24.

Also the back button doesn't work when leaving the Virgin Media Store app, however clicking on the Home button or the Guide button allows you to exit the app.

I don't put too much weight on Dutch changes as they are seldom the same as the ones in the UK, however I've had a quick look on the Ziggo (Dutch) site and they state that " a number of apps are temporarily unavailable, but may return later". They also list some apps that have been removed completely. No apps have been completely removed from the VM 360 boxes as part of this upgrade.

The current list of apps on the 360 (November 6th 2025) are:-  5, Al Jazeera, A-Maze-ing Mac,  Apple TV+, BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds, Channel 4, Dance TV, DAZN, Deutsche Welle, Disney+, Fiit, Fireplace, Fishing TV, Fit at Home, France24, ITVX, Mubi,  Netflix, Paramount+, Pluto TV, Prime Video, QVC+, Radio Line, Rakuten, Solitaire Classic, Space Moodies, STV Player, Subscriptions, Tetris, U, VM Store, Wall Street Journal, World Poker Tour, You Tube

(Al Jazeera,  Deutsche Welle, and France24 temporarily unavailable)

Some additional info that may or may not be related to the 5.22 update, but I feel it's needs to be noted as it may well be one of the bugs that were quashed.

It's possible that the issue with Game of Thrones plus other programmes in catch up [an ever decreasing number as most so called "catch-up" is now played via the broadcaster's apps] now play correctly in HD without the HLG flag ineptly added incorrectly.

"It looks to me as if this issue has been sorted. Looking at a couple of episodes that I'd previously watched from seasons 5 and 8, the HD versions now play correctly and no longer have an incorrect HLG flag. They play in HD and SDR as they should and do not cause the issues identified in this thread and other threads.

I looked a couple of other programmes in catch up where there is both a UHD version and an HD version, and the HD versions now play correctly so hopefully it is sorted for all such content.

I can't check the UHD versions, but they didn't have an issue as far as I am aware"

Maybe not all assets are fixed.  Sky movies have a film called September 5.  It's available on-demand but not on any of the many channels.  I've just checked and it's still washed out and with no subtitles either.

      Yes I'm on 5.22

        Hi 1701-e

I've just tested  September 5 on my LGC4.

It appears that the UHD and HD versions are labelled incorrectly.

The UHD version plays in BT.2020. VRR Information 50.0Hz Fixed. YCBCR420 10b TM SDR

The HD version plays in HLG HDR BT.2020.  VRR Information 50.0Hz Fixed. YCBCR420 10b TM HLG

The most immediate thing I saw was Advertising ID which allows VM to share your Advertising ID with apps. Naturally I disabled it.

Looks like it was set to "Don't allow" by default on my box.

        roy247 and Roger_Gooner

It was set to "Allow" on my box

Advertising ID has indeed been added under a separate heading however it might have split from being part of the Personalisation and Tailored ads settings which have been around since we first received the 360.  It would need somebody still on version 5.21 to look into those settings to check and confirm

It's only a small sample but all Sky Cinema HD films I've seen are in HLG when this is usually for UHD only. The reason for this must be to simplify encoding and distribution. As studios increasingly deliver one HDR master, Sky downscales UHD HDR masters to 1080p but keeps the HLG metadata and so avoids having to do an SDR grade. This is perfectly fine for older TVs which do not support HLG and so interpret it as SDR. However for TVs which do support HLG, pictures won't look good unless your TV is properly configured for HLG.

As for September 5, I've has a look at in in HD as I don't subscribe to UHD and it looks OK - but I have spent a lot of time setting up my TV.

In what way does it simplify encoding and distribution?

I have a subscription on SkyQ, and literally every Sky movie and entertainment programme I've looked that is in UHD on that platform has 4 versions, an SD one, an HD one, which has never been in HLG in my experience, a UHD one without HLG, and a UHD one with HLG.

That is the case for September 5 in common with similar movies and entertainment programmes.

The three versions without HLG look correct with the right colour space and what's more, if what you said was right, then there couldn't logically be a UHD SDR version, which there is. The encodings exist.

Do you see HLG tagging on the linear Sky Cinema channels which are only broadcast in HD?

None of us know where the issue originated, but the relevant programmes I could watch on Virgin [HD] were tagged as HLG until the past week or two and that caused issues including incorrect picture quality. Previous series of Game of Thrones and Brassic are examples of such programmes. For both of these and other programmes I've looked at, the HD versions on Virgin no longer have HLG tagging and now play correctly.

I can't speak about movies as I don't have a Sky Cinema subscription on Virgin.
