Sky Cinema UHD Reds are Oversaturated

I have just got Sky Cinema UHD on my virgin tv 360. I have a main box and second mini box. Main box is on a LG C1 and mini box is on a 2021 Samsung frame. Both are set to filmaker mode. Both are fine playing UHD and HDR content from Netflix/Prime/Disney/Apple, but whenever I play films from Sky Cinema UHD the colour is far too red. It’s very noticeable on the new Wonka film. Everyone’s faces look like tomatoes. Also just watched The Holdovers, reds are over saturated. I am guessing it is something to do with the tone mapping? This doesn’t seem so noticeable when playing live content like Sky Sports UHD.
Even if there is something I can configure, I don't want to have to change the settings on my TV every time I watch Cinema UHD on demand on my Virgin boxes - which I am paying £10 a month for the privilege of UHD.
Is this a known issue?

    Hi mvtv360

Make sure you have that your LG TV  HDMI Settings is set to HDMI Deep Colour.

I know you said that you don't want to change the LG TV settings every time you wartch UHD on Demand  but I would also experiment by changing the values under the following LG settings (they helped on my older LGTV and made the sport picture better too, especially when it was broadcast in HLG HDR) You can easily reset back to the default values from that screen too

Settings > All Settings > Picture > and hover the onscreen cursor over Picture mode (or HDMI Select Mode, that name varies between my TV's) Settings and type in 1113111  -  screenshot below

Try changing the EOTF setting to either SDR Gamma, HDR Gamma, or HLG  --- changing Colorimetry to BT2020 may help

I hope that roy247 won't mind me tagging him as he may be able to help as I recall he has an LG C1

  • Hi mvtv360,

Unfortunately I don't have Sky Cinema UHD anymore, (got removed by an offshore person when renewing my contract once but that's another story), so I can't check the UHD version but one of my granddaughters watched Wonka on Christmas day the HD version and it seemed OK from the small bit I saw.

I don't also don't use the filmmaker mode I use my own settings and the Cinema home user setting for HDR, filmmaker mode was just not quite right for me and possibly how bright my room is and the position of the TV, I do have a very large window.

Filmmaker Mode is not infallable and some adjustments might be needed. Try tweaking the Red Gain or White Balance to reduce excessive red.

  • Are you forcing HDR on the tv?

Sky Cinema UHD on VirginMedia has never had HDR available - unless it was recently added.

I've just tried a few assets and still no HDR option.

Sky Sports HDR works fine but the tv should only switch into HDR mode when the asset requests it.

Sky Cinema UHD should NOT be switching the tv to HDR.
