Brightness reduces when exiting any apps

I'm experiencing a picture issue when I navigate the menus or watch live TV on my brand new Virgin TV 360. We have had the box for about a week and had not noticed this issue until today. It's as if the box is on some kind of energy saving mode, where the brightness is lower or the colours appear extremely dull.

As soon as you enter an app or start a live recording, the picture suddenly appears perfectly and stays that way for as long as you're watching. Indeed, when you exit the recording/app, the colours on the menus even look perfect again - but this only lasts 1 or 2 seconds before the picture reverts back to the dull look again.

Please can someone help me. This is 100% a 360-related issue rather than the tv.

  • Hi hpcharnock

Thanks for posting and welcome to the community.

I can assure you this isn't an issue so please don't worry 🙂

It sounds like the way the box is set to be. If you press home and then settings in the far right corner, then go to system. Then go to 'standby power consumption' - what does this show? Is it in Eco Mode?

    Best wishes.

  • If I want it never to behave like this, should I switch it to "fast start?"

You can try setting it to fast start but I would be surprised if it makes any difference.

  • That's what I thought. I guess I can see how it goes. If this is how the thing is designed, it's an awful feature.

It sounds like you have a problem somewhere,. The only time you should see something like the problem you are describing is if you watch something in HDR/HLG for example TNT Sports Ultimate or Sky Sports UHD, where the picture is a lot brighter and if you are still on that channel when you look at the guide it is still as bright, until you go to back to a non HDR/HLG broadcast channel and the settings change on your TV.

It could also be some setting on your TV but if just watching a recording made on bbc1 the brightness changes when going back to live TV then that doesn't sound right. You could possibly test this by pausing a channel for a few minutes and then start watching again and see if the brightness levels change.

The fast start and active start modes AFAIK only affect how quickly the box starts up, receiving updates and connectivity to a mini box or the TVGO app, active start is the best compromise between performance and efficiency, eco start is like turning the box off so if you wanted to set a recording using the app then you couldn't. None of these settings affect the picture.
