360 Box(es) installation question

Hi,  Hopefully im not asking a regularly asked question (I did a search).

Long story short, I currently have 4x boxes - 3x V6 and 1x Tivo.  I rang VM last week as the Tivo box is slow, some apps dont work (as Im sure you know) and to see what upgrade options are as when I rang last year, there was no options.

I was originally told theyd replace the Tivo with a 360 in my current set up (they asked if I wanted to upgrade all boxes to 360 but said it would be extra £75 a month so I said no).  VM rang back later in the day to apologies and say what theyd originally offered was wrong, and instead they would replace all my boxes with 3x 360 and 1x Stream (which actually suits me better as can move Stream to another room!) and theyd do it at no extra cost!

They said boxes would be sent out, by Yodel, this week and I could simply replace myself as its just replacing box for box.  But, I got a text today saying an engineer was coming out this Wednesday and a time slot.  I rang VM to clarify and they simply said 'as I have 4 boxes, it needs an engineer!?'  Just thought I'd come on here and ask if anyone can explain further as to what that means?  Why?  Was the 1st thing I've been told incorrect and 360 need an engineer?  Just wanting some clarity from people in the know on here.

Im available to take a delivery, but work and home stuff means i cant be putting time aside this week for an engineer to come in to 4 rooms (thats another question, are the gonna need access to all rooms?)

Appreciate any insight.  Thanks

As far as a recording box setup goes, you have arguably the best setup VM can currently offer.

Migrating your account to TV360 opens the option for additional multiroom stream boxes, much depends whether you want to run TiVo-software or Horizon-software.

No apps are being removed from the V6, it remains fully supported. It's only the TiVo that is best now used as a recording box.

You cannot have more than three V6s, so you are being offered the best solution: migrade the V6s to 360s plus a Stream to replace the TiVo. As the Stream is broadband-only, it's best to run an Ethernet cable to where you want it located - which is not necessarily where the TiVo is.

As for the tech: just reschedule an appointment when it's convenient for you.

  • Thanks for the replies. Im OK having v6 or 360 really, and it was the only solution virgin said worked with my set up (if upgrading the tivo)

I think the only thing I was confused about was the appointment And if it was necessary. As I say, I was originally told you replaced them yourself. Is a tech appointment normal when going from v6 to 360?

And apologies if I posted in a wrong bit of the forum.  It wasn't till I posted that I noticed there's a techy / installation section!😆

Normally the V6 “upgrade” to 360 is just a new remote and a software update.  The old physical boxes remain.  They may be sending a tech to rejig the wiring as the old TiVo and cables will be redundant.

Thanks, never thought of it that way. I currently have 5x coax connections - 1 in living room (v6), 2 into 2 different bedrooms (both v6) and 1 coming into my loft, where the box inside splits it into 2 (tivo and super hub for Internet).

I guess what you say could be the explanation, but still would have just expected to set up the Stream box (replacing tivo) myself.

Im going to have to rearrange the appointment. Having the tech coming in, not knowing what they're going to need to do, for 4 rooms, means im going to have to do loads of rearranging stuff in the rooms internally. That's why I was happy when I thought they'd just be delivered and I could sort it myself.

  • It will be interesting to see what you end up with, originally someone with 3 V6 boxes needed an engineer visit for some reason, adjust signal levels or replace a V6 box with a mini box, I never did see an answer.

It's possible you might end up with 2 360 boxes and 2 streaming boxes.

You also need any unused connections fitted with a terminator.

Presumably that unused connection would be where the tivo is now in my loft, as the Stream box will replace it and doesn't need the connection? That sounds like the main reason for a engineer visit if that's the case.

Hi Maxieftm thanks for your post here although we're sorry to hear of your confusion regarding the install.

It is correct that with a change affecting so many boxes, we do send a technician out for this, particularly with the change from TiVo box to Stream.

The main reason though is that we don't send boxes out in the post, and an engineer visit is necessary for providing customers with new boxes.

If you need any further help, please let us know.

        Many thanks
