We got a new 360 box about a month ago to replace the Tivo and the instructions said to return the old equipment if it was one of several types (the Tivo wasn't listed). It pointed us to a recycling page with info on disposal, so we disposed of it.
Now we have received a request to return the Tivo. I expect it is just a general email that doesn't actually check what should be sent back.
I have a TiVo box to recycle following my upgrade to a 360 box, but the VM help pages say that I need to take the box to my local recycling centre. I’m loathe to do this as I’m concerned about my personal data. Please can you advise?
What personal info are you concerned about that you think will be on the device?
Account details including name
How/why would that be stored on the Tivo?

Your personal info would be stored on VM's servers, but not on any VM equipment.
According to https://www.virginmedia.com/help/return-or-recycle-equipment the old tivo boxes don't need returning, however you can use the following online webform to request packaging and send it back to VM.

After clicking Create a new label. you will be prompted for your email address. Once you receive the email you will be able to print out a returns label which includes a barcode. You can then parcel up your equipment and drop it off at the nearest Collect + store. Enclose a covering note with your account number and details of the returned equipment including serial numbers.
Make sure you receive a tracking receipt and keep it safe.

You can also return your equipment via an O2 store if you have a local one. If you do take that route then make a note of your account number along with the serial numbers of any equipment you are returning and give that to the O2 staff, retaining a copy yourself and possibly get them to sign for it/and or take a photo.
