Telephones (moving from BT)

Morning all,

Want to move from VM from BT line (phone/broadband through utility warehouse).

Currently I have hard wired telephones around the house coming from my utility cupboard, where the phone line comes in. I will want the Superhub installed in the same location.

I understand the VM phones connect to the back of the Superhub via RJ45/similar?

Can anyone give my advice how I could keep my current phone lines working, or what changes I would need to make?

PS - not sure what telephone equipment if any is provided with VM BB/telephone bundle..

  • Hi 877, thank you for your post.

We’re switching all customers to our new fibre home phone network.

Information on our home phone switchover, including getting set up with a fibre phone service, can be found here

In terms of discussing getting a landline service added onto your package, we'd suggest calling the team on 0345 454 1111. The options you'll need to select are one, then four, then one.

If you have any further queries, please pop back to us at your earliest convenience.

    Regards,
    Daniel

The most straightforward way to use a VM landline via the VM hub is to use a cordless phone system. Plug the base station into the VM hub and use cordless handsets around your home as required. You would need to make a judgement on how/if having the hub/base station in a cupboard might affect the cordless signal.

Alternatively, some have managed to connect existing phone wiring to the VM hub by means of an adapter lead. If you have a phone socket in your utility cupboard it may be possible to use an adapter lead to 'backfeed' the connection from the VM hub into the existing telephone wiring. This adapter image has been posted in the past.

I don't think VM will do phone wiring mod's for you as part of the installation. VM may offer that for an additional fee (£25) once you are installed although, from topics on here, it seems very hit-and-miss as to whether VM sends out a tech who knows anything about phone wiring or not.

That's very useful thank you, I'll do a bit more research about the adapter and the wireless base station.

Do VM provide any phone hardware with the telephone/broadband package do you know?

The only 'hardware' VM provides is an adapter to convert the RJ11 socket on the back of the hub to a BT socket.

The re-wiring option may become more complicated if you are using older telephones in your existing arrangement (early 2000s or before) as many of these devices can have problems with non-ringing when connected to the VM hub. There are ways/means around it but it is a further consideration if using older phones.
