Landline Voicemail not being picked up

Hi,

had recently swapped out an old phone with voicemail after found it wasn't working with landline (also switched over to digital by the engineer)

Currently using cheap wired handset with no voicemail, and left it to VM's voicemail

Unfortunately it doesn't go to voicemail, just rings - have tried both via mobile and from another landline, and also contacted VM today who said it should be fixed, but it's still not working.

Does it take a while to kick in?

When I dial 1571, there are options to change the message and general menu but nothing to say if it's active or not.
