Land Line Beeps, "no number" on call log

Started last Thursday, 5-6 times a day, randomly the phone will beep, a short beep as though it was going to ring but stopped. The call logger reports the connection, but no number identified and no message left.

I am not on VOIP yet, still have the old system.

I connected another phone to the main socket and it still beeps, so its not my extension or phone.

It beeps at all times, night and day, and so wakes me up, but as I said, only 5-6 times a day randomly.

Any ideas?

  • Hi sjgarth, thank you for your post.

We're sorry to hear about the problem you're having 😔

Does a beeping noise on your phones tend to indicate that you've received a voicemail message?

Please pop back to us at your earliest convenience.

    Regards,

  • No, no voice mail. My answering machine did not get time to activate. It is just the call log saying "no number".

Also, as I mentioned, I used a simple phone in the main socket and the beeping still happened.

The beeps are not regular, only 5-6 times a day, at anytime.

  • This pattern is often associated with what's known as a “one-ring” or “Wangiri” scam. In these scams, an automated system makes a very short call—usually just one ring—in hopes that you'll call back, which can connect you to a premium-rate number or incur unexpected charges. However, there are a few other possibilities:

    • Scam/Spam Calls: Fraudsters sometimes use caller ID spoofing to hide their real number or show “No Caller ID.” The fact that your log shows a connection without an identifiable number is common with these tactics.
    • Network/Carrier Glitches: On rare occasions, technical glitches or testing signals on your carrier’s network can result in phantom calls.
    • Voicemail System Checks: Some automated systems call to check voicemail connectivity, though these are typically accompanied by a short beep.

Since these calls began recently and occur multiple times a day, it’s wise to avoid calling back any unknown numbers. Consider these steps:

    • Contact Your Carrier: Ask if they’re aware of any network issues or if these might be scam calls targeting users in your area.
    • Enable Call Blocking: Many smartphones and carriers offer settings or apps to block calls from unknown or suspicious numbers.
    • Stay Cautious: Do not return the call unless you can verify its legitimacy.

Monitoring your call log and discussing the issue with your service provider can help you determine if this is a localized scam or a technical hiccup.

We have seen this issue on here before. IIRC the issue was to do either with spam calls or a fault on the line.

I would have searched out some past examples for you but, unfortunately, VM seems to have culled past topics more than 2 years old into an inaccessible archive. The most recent example, which sounds similar, is this

    https://community.virginmedia.com/discussions/Telephone/landline-keeps-ringing-at-night/5543347

where it mentions a number is actually recorded on 1471.

Do you get a number if you try 1471? It might help with diagnosing the issue.
