XGS-PON Packages

Virgin have nearly finished rolling out their XGS-PON FTTP product in my area, I was speaking to one of their guys that confirmed what they were rolling out and he said it is capable of 10Gbps symmetric.

I know you won't be able to get 10Gbps from the get go, but will they be offering 1Gbps symmetric packages or still the same bollocks and cap the upload to 50-100Mbps?

Also any one know the prices of their new service?

Thanks.

You'll have to just try it. If auto-negotiation fails to work, log into the hub 5x and manually configure the link speed to 2.5GbE. Let us know what happens.

If none of the above works consider a 10GbE switch such as the QNAP QSW-2104-2T with ports that support 2.5GbE, 1Gbps and 100Mbps.

Thanks, a better switch is on the cards once it’s installed. Just running a netgear GS108 at the moment, I was looking at one of the TP Link ones as ideally need 8 ports.

I would guess 2000/200 which AFAIK some customers in Ireland have.

Am already on 2gig, 2000/200 with xgspon network.

How are the XGS-PON BQMs looking in comparison to coaxial ones? Any themes or are they just as variable?

You might be thinking of the three trials which VM did in 2020 and 2021 on the HFC DOCSIS 3.1 network for 2.2Gbps download (with upload remaining at 50Mbps) using the hub 4. I think that there might have been an additional OFDM block (or an existing one could have been widened).

The trial actually showed 2.2Gbps download, and 214Mbps upload.  Modem was a standard Hub-4 which maxes out at 2.4Gbps.   In case you're interested it was 32 Docsis 3.0 QAM, plus 2 x OFDM downstream & 2 x OFDMA channels upstream.

Well I've not had any speed for the last 7 days now. 16/32 QAM on upload channels with 0 upload speeds. Say's I have 200-400 download randomly but trying to use it, feels like I'm on dial up.

Also I've seen someone say it's close to £300 for full 1gb fibre, well Vodafone who I switched from to Virgin because I needed more upload speed because I run a few game servers for my family & friends to play on & plex plus I do a lot of website package uploads so I needed to juice. Well, now I regret it because I'm not getting what I've paid for & I'm only in my 3rd month with them. If this continues, I'm going to leave & good luck to them making me pay a leaving fee. Not being forced to remain with a service this poor especially over xmas. Can't do anything, no services, no TV service I need my broadband for, no gaming. 3 teenage sons & no internet, can you imagine..

But that said, Vodafone are rolling out full fibre, my Sister & mom in Sheffield just down the road have moved to full fibre, 400mb download minimum & up to 900mb upload for £28 a month. So, I'm just waiting for this to roll out in Rotherham & I'm gone if this continues!

      Hey VsUK,

Thanks for keeping us posted on your issue, we can see you have posted in multiple threads, we would advise doing so as this can cause confusion on the issue, if you go back to the original thread we will keep in touch with you there.

Any decision on symmetrical speeds (or speeds different to what we have now) will finally be done without being so technically constrained by the ageing HFC network and perhaps DOCSIS. Having said that it would be good to know what is the maximum upload speed the hub 5X can support.

Would assume 10gb, which is around 8ish after all the losses?

im currently on 2000/200, doesn’t seem right throttling an entire new network because the older one can’t reach x speeds,

Imagine OR capping fttp to 80/20 because that’s all there fttc customers can get?

There is no prospect whatsoever of 10Gbps in the foreseeable future due to lack of demand and competitor pressure. Just because it may be possible doesn't mean you should do it.

  • You asked about the max upload speed? I assumed it would be 10gb, as that’s what’s capable.

still nothing stopping them doing 1:1 for all packages, tbh when they do that a lot of people would probably be happy on the lower speeds as I’m sure a couple of people only upgrade just for the better upload speed,

I don’t notice much difference from 1gig to 2gig, but 100mb to 200mb in upload is a major difference to me.

Nice and from what I'm reading symmetrical packages are available on all speed tiers as well.

Called them up and have to wait up to 15 days for my area to be activated, hopefully get the email to say it has been done sooner than that.

Well I die happy on Coaxial than move to full fibre without modem mode
