Sudden poor 1GB Volt Broadband speeds

Hi all

I have had the 1GB "Volt" package for a long while now, and usually speed tests show outstanding results (minimum 1GB download and 100MB upload, pretty much all of the time).

However just recently I have been getting download speeds varying between 200MB and 600MB, and it does not seem to go above this.  Upload however is still good at 100MB.

I have rebooted the router / PC etc. many times.

The connection is wired, not wireless.  The PC is directly connected to the router.  I generally use a USB connection, but have tried switching to Ethernet as well, but it makes no difference.

I have enclosed an image which appears to indicate the issue is not with the speed coming in to the router.

Nothing has changed, so I am mystified about this, and would greatly appreciate any ideas!

Cheers

Hi and thanks for the reply.

In Safe with Networking, the speed on two tests was 1GB.

So your device is at fault.

You need to determine which software is causing the slow down, usually Antivirus related.

Thank you.  Do you have any advice on what steps I can take?  Tried disabling Norton, and a good few other items running in the background, but to no avail.

System is actually pretty 'simple' - I don't have a lot of software or things running in the background.

Well technically it's 'known' to be software since you see full speed in safe mode with networking.

It's possible to disable each startup item from task manager, with a reboot in between, to determine if it's one of those items at fault.

Not sure I understand why would you use a USB? Ethernet adapter ? when you have Ethernet port?

To answer legacy1's question, the reason for using USB with adapter is when using direct Ethernet, the connection seems to drop all the time.  Tried new leads, even motherboard was replaced, same issue.  But when using USB the connection never drops.  Weird.

On the speed issue, I have disabled pretty much everything from Startup and also tried disabling the Norton AV software, but nothing has made any difference.

Just wondered if there were any other things I could try?  Thank you very much.

    Problem found.  Norton.

Whilst I had previously "disabled" it, I decided this time to completely uninstall it, and test again.  Low and behold, the speeds were immediately up to 1GB again.

Reinstalled Norton and speeds low again.

I shall now try to do battle with Norton....

Thanks again for all the help in identifying the issue.

You will not win the battle with Norton, leave it uninstalled.

I had suspected that may be the case...

Are there more recommended products to use, such as McAfee?
