Slow Internet Speeds peak times

Hi,

I currently have 1gb fibre and until around a month ago I saw no issues with speed.

There was some downtime in our area which required an engineer to sort the issue, and ever since then I have been unable to hit 1gb speeds on a speed test.

I have my Virgin Hub 5 in modem mode and I use asus xt8 mesh wifi system. I have a cat6e cable connected in the 2.5gb port on the virgin router, which connects into the 2.5gb port on the main asus node.

Using the asus router app I can do a speed test directly through the router in cable mode, instead of testing the connection between the router and my phone for example.

below is a history of speed tests and it's quite obvious I am not getting the speeds I expect, and also in peak hours it's barely even hitting over 200mbps.

I have called virgin on multiple occasions and they don't have a clue what you're talking about. I've been forced to reset my virgin router multiple times, taking it out of modem node an each time still slow speeds. I then get told they will put a speed check on my account over X days but I never hear anything back.

I'm starting to feel very frustrated now with the speeds I'm getting. It's obvious that for whatever reason I'm being throttled, especially after 5pmish in peak times.

Any idea anyone?

Call 0800 561 0061 to check for a fault in your street.

Look at the VM Hub Upstream & Downstream status tabs for hints of issues on the connection.

With the VM Hub in Router mode run a Realspeed test via ...
    https://www.samknows.com/realspeed/

Once the test begins click on: Run full test to see all the stats.

The speed at the Hub should reflect your subscription.

      Hi,

I put the router back in router mode and ran the test you suggested. See below. Haven't had a chance to call vm though

thanks for the advice so far

    On our wavelength

Have you tried using the hub on its own with Wi-Fi to see what speed you get then?

Yes! See my previous post I just ran the suggested test.

Also ran the test again a little quicker but not even close to 1gb.

Also I rang the number and there's no known issues in my area.

Its not like your speed will change between modes VM should know that instead of jump through hoops

I'll try and do a wire test tomorrow. I'm not setup currently for it.  I've tried another speed test now its later and past the peak and speeds are faster

Ignore the mobile speeds not concerned by that.

        Another test at 7.45am

i think its quite obvious that at peak times I'm either being throttled majorly or the network can not handle the load in my area.

  • As suggested in the 2nd reply, what are your upstream & downstream signals like in the Modem Network Status ?

These should be available in either Modem or Router modes.  (192.168.0.1 or 192.168.100.1)

Speeds are back to being terrible now at 7.30pm

  • Can i ask the none VM experts in this forum how i can get Virgin Media to listen to me? I've been offered a wifi booster to sort my issues out...it's starting to frustrate me how Virgin media will not listen to me.

I have just done a test now...this is a wired test plugged into the virgin media router directly.  I dont know how much more information i can provide Virgin Media before they start to listen...
