Recently upgraded from 300mb to 1gb and finding my wifi speed is now slower

Hi all,

Last week my contract was up so was looking to try out Vodafone ffth as I work from home often and game online. 

When I contacted virgin to cancel, the deal they offered was excellent so decided to stay. My original broadband was on the 300mbps plan. I found it reliable and didn't often have issues with lag or buffering when gaming or streaming. 

My router arrived on Tuesday and I set it up. Straight away I knew something was as the when trying to run a scan on the connect app it just didn't work. It seemed like it couldn't find the router although the light was solid. 

I eventually got it up and running and since Tuesday I have been running frequent tests when I am in the house. During the first 24 hours I wasn't getting anything over 100mbps when testing on samknows on multiple devices such as laptop, iPhone and PS5. I know the later isn't a reliable test but on my previous plan I was constantly getting between 100-200mpbs over wifi while I hardly get over 50mpbs now with massive lag spikes. 

I contacted technical support on Wednesday evening and was informed I was to wait out the 48hrs which I done. Things hadn't improved so I spot a technical support again yesterday evening. In fact they had gotten worse as I was now receiving less than 50mbps throughout my house and on multiple devices. They agreed that my speeds weren't up to scratch but their resolution was to order a booster. I explained that even if I was sat a meter away from the router that I was still getting the same speeds so wasn't sure that would help. They confirmed that they were raising a case and that they were doing some configuration on the router and I was to restart it after 3 hours. I done so and nothing has changed. 

I have hit 800mpbs once through a wired connection and occasionally 200-300mps wired but surely this isn't the fasted considering the difference in cost between 300mbs and 1 gig? 

Below are my test results from when I spoke to technical support last night - 

Test taken on Mobile (bedroom upstairs with booster)Speed when I was 1 meter away from routerWifi on laptop when I was approx 2 meters away. (apologies for quality, was speaking to support over whatsapp)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully things can improve.

    test by wire

    Or get a pod or get a better wifi router with 1Gb ports put hub in modem mode.

    VM hubs now try to look for its pod and because of that causes it to be slow.

    Or you can cancel

    I'm assuming you got a new Hub 5 for 1Gb.  These are Wifi 6 ax protocol devices and can cause issues with some older IoT devices. The speeds you are seeing over wifi suggest your kit is running over the 2.4Ghz band, and not the 5Ghz?  The Pods may help, especially the new "black" Pods, as these are also Wifi 6 ax devices.  As for wifi, VM only guarantee 30Mb in any case, so unfortunately it may be up to you to resolve the wifi problems?  Have you tried a wifi scanner from the Google Play Store, to analyse your property?

    At least, on the upside, your circuit is getting the full 1Gb speeds to your Hub, so I would expect a top wired speed of around 940Mb on a 1Gb NIC.

      Thanks for the reply. It is indeed the new Hub 5. I have changed some of my devices to 5Ghz and it seem improved as getting up to around 200-300mbps now. I think I was just under the impression that when I got upgraded I would all of a sudden have nearer 1gbps on everything so I think this is on me being a bit unrealistic. Especially since I was already getting decent speeds previously and was expecting a bit more.

        You will not see full wifi speeds from the Hub 5 unless your kit matches the wifi 6 spec and is setup for 5Ghz and channel width.  You also need to factor in the number of aerials etc on devices.  Wifi is a bit of a minfield so many users here find wired devices (where possible) give the best results, especially if paired with a >2.5Gb NIC.

    Is the Wi-Fi booster a 2.4GHz only device ?  ( for these up to 50Mb/s is normal )
