100% your VPN operator are the issue, if this is an office VPN take it up with your employer.

As @Client62 said. Company VPNs deliberately restrict Internet speeds to stop individual clients stealing bandwidth from everyone else. You will be allowed just enough bandwidth to do the job.

It's not an office VPN. And if I connect to another country, US or Netherlands for example, speeds are fine. And I've just spoken to two people that can connect at full speed but they have different ISPs. It's not a Proton issue, it's a Virgin issue.

Hi Tenebreaux
Welcome back to the Community Forums.
Sorry to hear of your concerns with your broadband speed when using your VPN.
We cannot offer support for third-party networking, such as VPN access.
I would maybe look at the ping differences you're getting when you have the VPN on, against when you have it off, accessing the same sites. This might help identify the cause.
If the ping remains the same/low, then it's more than likely an issue with the VPN rather than our network.
Keep us posted on how you get on, as the Community Forum members may be able to assist you further in helping to resolve your concerns.
