After upgrade I'm at my old speed in modem mode

As per title.

I upgraded from 125Mb to 250Mb

All is fine when in the hub but I use an Asus Router RT-AX86U and when I put the hub into modem mode and connect, I am immediately shoved back to 125Mb.

The speed tests are identical to what I'd expect from the old speed so it's not a coincidence.

I wondered if the  sticky IP might have been the problem as when I connected I got exaclty the same IP as usual.

I did a mac clone which indeed gave me a different IP but speed is the same.
If i revert back to the hub the speeds are fine.

Can anyone throw some light on the issue as i should be able to use the router for any  speeds. I don't understand why VM is putting my speed back just for using my router.

  • Can someone help with my problem

    I upgraded to 250Mb from 125Mb.

Hub came yesterday and was fine on speed. Today I put it into modem  mode and connected it to my Asus RT-AX86u which I've had for 2 years. The speed immediately reverted to 125Mb which seems to be no coincidence as doing speed tests the figures are almost exactly as per the speeds I expect to see.

Can anyone help with this, it's almost as though when connected to the router VM sees it as my old account and downgraded me. I can't figure what the problem is otherwise.

I finally found the problem. Somehow Adaptive QOS was turned on (Not sure how or why) but on disabling it, the speeds are normal now.

Think broadband, OOKLA , Fing on my phone.

All report reliably - otherwise I'd not see the correct speeds from the hub. They all concur

Thanks but that isn't logical for the following reasons:

      1. Using same cable with Hub 5 getting the 250Mb speedsbut when switching to modem mode same cable isn't delivering.
      2. Speeds over Wifi 5Ghz show exaclty the same thing 260 ish with hub and 90-110 with  Modem mode.
      No cable involved

This will be the last resort but yeah I have that one in mind.

Interesting that one of my speed tests recently the speed shot up to 250 for about 3 seconds then reverted back to the 100. So i know it's capable plus quite a few people seem to have the RT-AX86U and report high speeds like 1Gb

Thanks to all who gave input.

Look in the Hub 5  Check router status >>> Configuration tab to check the speed profile that is loaded.

For my Hub the field is called Max Traffic Rate and it is bits per second,
there is a Downstream and an Upstream figure.

For M250 the Downstream value would be above 250,000,000
and the M250 Upstream value above 25,000,000.

      Hi Alessandro,

      Thanks for your input.
The Hub was fine on it's own it was when I put it into modem mode so I knew somehow the problem must have been the Asus Router.

Thankfully I found the problem to be that Adaptive QOS was  on and  I don't actually remember turning it on.
Somehow this never affected the 125Mbs but impacted the move to 250Mbs. I turned that off and the speeds are good now.
      🙂

        Knows their stuff

yep adaptive QOS with a MANUAL settings where the download speed was probably set somewhere around the original speed tier 🙂 Test with it off and then change the value to average of several speed tests e.g. 249 if you want to set QOS back on. Remember the upstream is also slightly higher on your new speed tier too
