VOIP phone

I'm trying to help my parents move from a PSTN number to a VOIP/Cloud phone, along with a Fibre broadband connection.

I spent a good hour with VM Online chat Saturday but didn't get anywhere.

During the Fibre/phone request it said we can move the phone number to VM (which I believe is now VOIP).  It seems that VM don't offer VOIP handsets with the connection which surprised me.  They said I would need to buy my own from the "Market place".  I asked how it connected, is it by MAC address configured on the router - he didn't answer, I asked numerous time and all he said was 'a cable will be provided'.

I asked if we get a VM VOIP Web Portal where we can answer calls and control forward (have this with my business) but he said no.

Does anyone know about the handset and connection? - I read on VM website that you don't need to change you phone?! - does the router have a socket for a digital phone via a standard UK phone socket?

We did similar when moving from BT & Plusnet to VM in 2017.

We ported our 3 BT numbers to SIP/VOIP provider Sipgate & took Broadband only from VM, this remains our current configuration. We do have the proper VOIP portal from Sipgate as you mention.

Our Cisco VOIP kit is connected to the network sockets of the VM Hub, but being genuine SIP/VOIP we are not tied to VM or to a specific location & can also make / take VOIP calls via a SIP/VOIP app on a mobile.

VM marketing have confusingly, stupidly even, used the term VOIP, when what the customer gets from VM is an Analogue telephone service from the TEL 1 RJ11 socket of the VM Hub. A basic RJ11 to BT socket adaptor is used to enable an existing Analogue phone to be used.
