Sockets on the wall.

I recently moved into a house. The virgin medium sockets looks very messy on the wall. Do I have to use two boxes with a power supply? Can I connect the Hub 3 directly to the cable which is coming out of the virgin wall socket at the right most?

If you only have broadband you can delete everything in that picture with exception of the far right white isolator box

The box on the left looks like a powered splitter (basically a single booster), so possibly the previous people had issues (a TV upstairs maybe) and the booster was fitted to fix that - just speculation though.

But yes, it can do no harm to just try connecting the hub directly to the coax cable from the right hand box and see. If it works and is consistent for a week or so then fine and you can remove everything else. And if not; then just put it back the way it is.

I will try that, although I do not think it is that simple.

The box second from right is the ONT, so connect your hub to either of the coaxial cables coming out of it. It will need to remain powered to work. The box on the right is the internal termination box which provides the fibre to the ONT.

You are right. I opened the box and checked.

That pic is an isolator. The link I posted was to the other box which is a distribution amplifier. The distribution amplifier allows the cable to be split without signal loss.

There is nothing to stop you connecting your VM hub direct to the supply socket on the right hand side box to see if it works or not.

But the fact that you have the amplifier in place, and there is a further passive component connected to the supply side of the amplifier, suggests the previous customer had some sort of issue with signal level or quality.

What description does it say on the opposite side of the passive device connected to the supply cable to the amplifier (the side we can't see of metal rectangular component under the arrow)?

I did what you have suggested. It is working. I am glad I could took off unnecessary cables. I will upload a photo later.

  • For people who helped and are still interested. I connected the router Hub 3 to the box at the right directly. The broadband has been working fine. As the photos show, the box on the left was taken off the wall now. Looks much tidy. I am not sure what the box on the left was for. Perhaps for Virgin Media TV? I am happy to see a much cleaner wall.

  • One last thing. The cable with an isolator appears to be necessary. A general cable (without isolator) seems to have some speed issue.
