Should I invest in a gaming router?

Just looking for advice really. I have a Hub5 and I use a power line adapter to provide a wired Ethernet connection to my gaming pc in a different room. I average between 25-40ms latency on Call of duty would upgrading to a gaming router reduce my ping and if so would I be worth the investment? If I will only reduce the ping by hard wiring my pc directly into the router then I see no point in getting one hence the question and looking for advice.

The ping time is mostly a function of how far your are from the target server, which can be 1000KM & more.

A gaming router is not going to reduce the distance or the ping times.

Gaming router is really just like any home router but is a router better then the router mode yes would it improve your ping it shouldn't if router mode does all the packet forwarding without delay like modem mode of cause same goes for modem mode if its forwarding packets without delay but normally should not be a problem.

Test by modem mode by wire and see if its any better then router mode by wire of course VM have problems with upstream load that can cause you to have ping spikes or if you cause ping spike by upload/downlaod which a router with BWM/QoS can help

One thing not mentioned is that ‘ping’ uses the ICMP protocol and is sent at the lowest priority which is totally different from standard data. It’s fine to find the route used, but not much else.

  • 25-40ms over, I'm assuming, a HFC connection is pretty reasonable.

However, as advised by others it's worth checking the latency without the powerline adapters in play.

  • Hi homalgo1 👋.

Thanks for reaching out to us and welcome to the Community Forums. Apologies for the issues that you are facing with your Hub and speeds, whilst we cannot advise using any additional third party devices, we would advise that we look at your equipment further. A powerline adapter would not be viable against a Hub 5 due to the incompatibility of the adapter and the Hubs specifications, there are higher spec third party Wi-Fi Booster/Extenders you can obtain that are capable of the speeds you are subscribed to and will work better alongside of the Hub 5.

If you are seeking more of a sturdy reliable connection, ethernet would be an option via our Wi-Fi Max 👉 Wi-Fi Max. You can still face latency issues with the server that you are connected to as well as your PC settings and monitor settings. Should Wi-Fi Max not be an option, relocating the Hub closer to the PC to provide a shorter range of ethernet cable required for a secure connection.

I hope this helps, should you have any concerns or further questions please come back to us.
