New House Requires Re-cabling

A few questions for the VM representatives...

We're due to be moving house in October. We're currently with Virgin at the old house, but we're out of contract.

Our new house was previously cabled for Virgin and according to the VM postcode checker, it's just a case of plugging the gear into the existing socket. The reality, however, is that there is no existing socket and the consumer side of the coax has been cut off in the termination box on the front of the house, but thankfully the incoming feed from your street box looks to be intact. So I'm going to need an engineer to run in a new coax from the termination box, around the house and into a 10mm conduit that I've had prepared that goes through the wall into the study and terminates in an empty socket box. Is this something you can arrange for me without me needing to go through the dreaded call centre experience?

We have the advantage of owning both houses and therefore can do a soft move between the two over a period of time, rather than on a single day. As we're out of contract, is there any disadvantage to me starting a brand-new account for the new house and then cancelling the existing account at the old house when we're fully out of it? Or can we add a second house to the existing account? Hopefully there are no implications that would stop us being able to use our existing legacy Blueyonder email addresses?

This isn't something I need to do for at least a month, but I wanted to sound you out about the best way forward.

Thanks,

Steve

Moving house should be a "Move and Transfer" whereby you take your existing kit and Contact and move.  Nothing should change.  However, you cannot have two accounts at the same time.  Also as accounts are tied to a house address, not a person, a  new account will be opened for the new house, when the old account is ceased.  I would suggest VM will only send an engineer when the move is fully completed.  This way you get to keep your BY mailbox.  However, personally, I would take this opportunity to move to a non ISP tied mail service and forget about VM for email.

The existing account is in my partner's name so I don't see there should be a problem opening a new one in my name. It would be advantageous to have broadband co-existing in both the old and new houses for the month or so it will take to get fully moved over, hence my reticence to do a move & transfer.

Yes, that's also correct. However, when you cancel your account, your current mailbox(s) will cease after 90 days.  If that's not a problem, then go for it :-)  The way VM mail is currently going at the moment, it may be a good thing.

The Move and Transfer would be the usual way to do this. However you might find it financially worth while to simply apply for a contract at the new house, and get the substantial discount as a new customer.  Check the prices offered on the website.

The only downside to this option is that you will eventually lose those email addresses. However as @Adduxi says, you would be very well advised to move to alternatives now while you can do so at your own pace.

You say "Now that the phone service is VoIP, there's no advantage to having a phone with Virgin". That is often wrong as VM sells bundles and you might find a broadband/phone deal that costs less than only broadband.
