Hub3 and upgrade to 500Mb

Hi

My son is upgrading his Virgin broadband from 350Mb to 500Mb and has a Hub3 modem at present.

i know Virgin are sending a new modem ( prob hub5) ,but my son is away when the 350Mb /500Mb switchover is carried out and he has cctv@ home ,so thought the virgin service would continue to work.

a virgin rep told him you have to change over the modem as it’s a different speed(faster service) and needs the new modem.

So, should the virgin broadband continue to work on the hub3 ?

or he must change over to the new hub5 modem ?

Thanks

Its best not to upgrade then be away not to be able to do it. The hub 3 will stop working after some days swapping to a hub 5 may need resetting of cctv unless they use modem mode and own router.

      Hi

ah yes forgot to mention he runs the hub3 in modem mode,so could we switchover to the virgin hub5 before the 350>500 switchover or will the 500mb service expect the hub5 to be online ?

      thanks

The 500Mb will likely happen when the hub 5 is connected from what I know VM will be expecting the change over when you get the hub and maybe some blinking light at VM end say "allow me" you will then need to wait about 10 minutes for the hub to update before changing to modem mode.

    Hi eng59

The hub 3 is capable of running all speeds up to 600Mb and is only usually replaced if faulty, or if the speed has been upgraded to either 1 Gig or 2 Gig.

If your son does receive a new hub then the VM systems will automatically de-activate the old hub and the new hub will need installing (usually within 24 hours of receipt of the new hub) Hopefully someone (yourself perhaps) will be available to take delivery of the new hub and install it.

If your son has and uses  the VM Connect app then the internal systems might automatically pick up  and use the SSID and password from the old hub which will avoid him having to make any changes to his other devices, otherwise they all need setting up with the new SSID and password.  If that's the case then it will be a simple case of unplugging the old hub and replacing it with the new hub.

If he doesn't use the VM Connect app then it might be a good idea to log into the new hubs settings and change the SSID and password so they replicate those from the old hub3 than set all the devices up with the new SSID and passord..

If it’s modem mode it may not affect the cctv apart from the WAN IP change due to the new Hub.
