External box and cable

Hi,

I am not a Virgin Media customer at the moment but used to be, I still have the external cable and connection box outside my home to enable me to come back to Virgin Media. But my neighbour wants to render their wall, and the connection box is actually on their wall not mine; I’ve looked to try and move it but the cable feeding the box is not long enough to move it. What are my options?

  • Thanks for replies, I’ll sort it out when present broadband runs down and expires and if I return to VM they will have to renew the supply

Presumably your neighbour is not willing to have the box reattached post-rendering.

Can't imagine VM will do too much for you if you are not presently a customer.

Can you bring the cable and box to your side of the property line and secure it to something (fence, post, wall etc.) so you keep it intact?

You might get some better/further help if you post some pic's showing the relative locations of box, your property line etc.

There’s just no length on the cable coming out of the ground into the box and I need about half a metre. Neighbour says he’ll just remove it and cut the cables.

        Not very neighbourly of him!

If you ever plan to return to VM, then you may need to factor in a new cable as part of the process. With that in mind you should not cancel any existing broadband services while you wait for a VM cable to be installed. New cable installations from VM can get bogged down with months of delays so you would do best to overlap an existing service with any new VM service to avoid being cut off while waiting for VM at some point in the future.

  • If the neighbour didn't agree to the installation of cable/box on his property and no wayleave in place he can cut the cable and remove the box.  Many VM installation contractors go for easy option and ignore legal obligations etc.  Or you could consider  extending the cable -  F-type connector kits for co-axial cable extension or repair are available Amazon, eBay etc.  Search  "Type f plug extension cable" Costs vary On length etc £7.50+

I don’t think either myself or previous neighbour realised that both external boxes were fitted on their side of the front wall. I’ll wait for my broadband to expire and if I decide to return to VM will sort out new supply.
