Ethernet Connection Speeds Hub 5X

Hi,

I just switched from Sky to Virgin for faster speeds, as Sky capped us at 52mbps. Virgin just installed fibre (1132mbps), and while WiFi (on Virgin router) near the router is solid (around 800mbps), wired ethernet and mesh performance is disappointing with speeds sub 200mbps generally.

Powerline connections are only hitting 20mbps (used to be 45mbps with Sky, so at least expect that as I realise powerlines aren't the best), UniFi mesh gets 120mbps, and even direct Ethernet into the Hub only gives 80mbps. All cables are CAT5e at a minimum, but I also bought some CAT8 cables to try and same result. Tried everything I can think of, modem mode with a Archer AR400 (similar speed of 80mbps), router reset, even swapped the Hub as engineer visited and agreed something’s off. Same results with the new 5X as well.

Not sure what else to try other than maybe a different Hub model? Seems to be a few topics on the subject, but no one ever has an answer and the community boards tend to get closed off with no true answer. Hopefully someone can help.

Thanks in advance!

Check the Service Speed to the VM Hub:

With the Hub in Router mode ...

    https://www.samknows.com/realspeed/

Once the test begins click on: Run full test
to include: Latency, Jitter, Packet loss & Upload speed

The speed at the Hub should reflect your subscription.

The same “Samknows Realspeed” tests are available as very handy
apps for iPhone/iPad and Android mobile / tablets.

Yes, this is correct. Hub reflects the full 1132 (over around that). Various devices show different speeds and depending on location in house.

You say that you have a hub 5x, and that you've tried modem mode with a Archer AR400  (similar speed of 80mbps). Modem mode isn't available on hub 5x.

You'll get the fastest speeds if you use the 10Gbps port which is marked red and directly above the Tel ports.

As per legacy1 I suggest that you disable EEE and green ethernet in the NIC settings. And run the samknows test as indicated by Client62

That unofficial work around only works on the 1Gb ports and will most likely break when the CMTS does a DHCP renew.

Ah well, I was going to get a Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway if it did work, but it didn't, so no point in running it.

  • Update: as suggested, SamKnows test shows 1132 to router and 25.5 to device on powerline. Shows 1051 to router and 130mbps to device (iPhone) via Mesh and 1058mbps to router and 443mbps via device (iPhone) on Virgin Hub.

I have been through all of this already before as well.

You may have done many tests, but remember what your fellow forum members read in black and white is all we can safely assume has been investigated.

What does the SamKnows test report with a laptop cable connected direct to the Hub 5x ?

Use the Full Test so we have all the figures.

Does the Hub 5x have a "Connected devices" menu that shows if devices are connected to a network port at 100 / 1000 / 10,000 ?  We would expect to see the laptop connected at 1000 on any of the 1 Gigabit ports.

        Correct.

samKnows shows 1130mbps to router and 80mbps to device direct connect to router with CAT8 cable.

it does have it and it says 1000mbps next to the Ethernet connection

  • OK, so plugged a PS5 direct into router and got 800mbps, that's better. Then plugged that into a unmanaged switch and got around the same (780mbps). So getting somewhere kind of.

Played with it more. It doesn't like a unmanaged switch and that maybe the issue with the powerline as well. It doesn't appear to like multiple connections either. Got the mesh running at 500mbps at the router, which translates to 120mbps at another connection point; not great considering the Hub's WiFi gives me 300mbps (albeit at not as solid of a connection that I'm looking for. Need to solve the powerline issue really.
