Do I need an engineer

Hi all,

I’m hoping someone can advise. I'm moving and I’m wondering if it’s suitable to self install my Virgin Media hub. There is an old Telewest phone socket which is not like the images on the relocation guidelines. Also there isn't a hard plastic box on the wall - just a cable with a TRIS-102A connector.

I have confirmed that Virgin is available at the property using the postcode checker.

(I can't seem to post photos on this forum and not sure how else to get this reviewed by the VM team)

Thanks, Maureen

You should see a camera icon on the bottom toolbar when posting.  Use this to insert a photo for comment.  Is the unit something like this photo?

You can also check for a loose cable as not all properties have a socket.   Look outside for a brown or grey VM box on the wall and trace the cable to the inside.  If it is a loose cable only, you will need one of these to connect the Quickstart cable.  https://www.diy.com/departments/slx-f-type-satellite-cable-coupler/5028422001905_BQ.prd

  • Sorry was posting originally from a phone so could not see a camera. (It's for my mother and is on the first floor of sheltered accommodation for an 80 year old so just trying to make it easier for her)

Okay, it looks like the incoming cable is the black one in the first picture.  This screws onto the "In" on that isolator.  The other end, that white cable is where the Hub goes. So, find out where the other end of that white cable is.  It is simply the cover is missing from the isolator box in the first picture, and the isolator has fallen out or disconnected for what ever reason.

There is no harm in trying the Hub when it arrives, and if all fails, get a tech visit to sort it out.

I should also point out the phone socket in the first picture will most likely now be redundant.  VM have moved to using a socket on the back of the Hub for the phone.
