Cab i get VM alongside my current FTTP ?

Hi there

im new to the forum but was just looking for some clarification on two connections.

I currently have Openreach FTTP 900/115 installed at my home and was also considering getting VM 1gig for the symmetrical UP and Down as my area has just had a rollout of VM / XGS-PON / nxtfibre apparently not so long ago.

I was recently browsing the vm site and today an rep from VM turned up at my door asked for me and stated id been looking on the site and if i would like to switch.

I stated that i was considering getting a second connection mainly for the upload speed otherwise im still very happy with my current FTTP from openreach as one connection would be for the house users, gaming etc and the second would be used soley for me as i upload alot and also have my sites projects etc from home on my own servers.

He stated well i wouldnt need two connections would pay my existing remaining contract and do a good deal but he left his card and left.

Now my main question with me wanting to keep my existing FTTP on the Openreach network would i be able to order Virgin Media and have that installed alongside my current connection ? as last thing i would want is them to disconnect my current fibre and use that cable as a pull cord (assuming overhead drop line)

any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks,

Chris.

  • my trail of thought was yeah rite ive heard that before with previous door knockers when he realised no sale was to be had he quickly left and he was more bothered about a sale than what i was actually saying since they both run on different networks why he was trying to get me to end my current contract when im willing to pay for 2 services.

and that is my issue and putting me off ordering them chopping the current fibre line i dont have phone lines as when i got my current FTTP i got them to remove the old copper as a tree from next door at the time (since cut down) was gonne make things awkward so i told them just snip the old copper line use that as a pull cord worked great so ive removed old phone socket and have a spare covered hole in the wall next to the openreach ONT so a new line could easily fit through.

      On our wavelength

As has been said, the fibre that openreach provide is theirs and VM will run in their own fibre to a 5x hub, so you can have both services at the same address.

XGS-PON does support symmetrical up/down (that’s what the S stands for) however, in my area symmetrical is coming but date yet to be determined. The 5X hub has no modem mode, but I still run it through a DrayTek multi WAN router which has VM and Starlink running happily together with a Three 4G modem configured as a failover if required. In the 5X router you just need to either double NAT or set it to DMZ to the DrayTek and let it handle the incoming traffic and redirects if required.
