Won’t extend my contract extend by 1-2 weeks

I have been a VM broadband customer having joined last January as I got a good deal with Volt on my 2 long term O2 phone contract. A year down the line I’m having to leave VM as I have had lots of issues with gadgets and smart devices dropping WiFi connections. When I joined VM in January I was told I could have wifi 7 within months, I was also told that the WiFi 6 modem would support 100 connections, but a year down the line I find I’m stuck on WiFi 6. The issue is that I have loads of smart tv’s, sky boxes, ring cameras, phones, PC’s plus around 12-15 smart plugs this time of year. I had an expert check my setup and I find that WiFi 6 cannot cope with all my appliances despite what I was told when I signed up. A few weeks ago I very sadly took advantage of the ability to leave the contract early without penalty due to the high price increase. Having agreed a termination date with VM I find that due to personal problems I could not switch to a new provider who offers WiFi 7 by the agreed date. I contacted VM to extend my termination by 2-3 weeks and got a flat NO reply. Does anyone know if there is a possibility to extend this date, or even to go onto a pay for a rolling month contract for an extra month and how to get this ?

  • I should also add I would be happy to stay with VM if they provide the WiFi 7 modem I need but they also said no to thi.

If you want Wi-Fi 7 put your hub into modem mode and use your own router. Just make sure it's a proper Wi-Fi 7 router.

Sadly I cannot do this as I have no space and no 3 pin plug next to the VM modem. I actually bought an eero pro mesh system off Amazon but had to send it back. I need a dedicated WiFi 7 modem that will replace the VM WiFi 6 one rather than one that just sits next to it.

There is no need to put a router next to the VM hub, in can be anywhere in the house. In fact my VM hub is under the floor under the stairs cupboard. Ethernet cable is very easy to hide.

Be aware WiFi 7 may not make any difference and a lot of ISP routers only provide 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz with their WiFi 7. It not mandatory to also provide the 6Ghz band with WiFi 7 as it was with WiFi 6e. You are far better off getting your own networking equipment. Even though the WiFi 7 access points I use support 300+ users I still have 3 to cover my whole house and garden.

I appreciate WiFi 7 may not make a difference but I have had 11 months of regular WiFi drops with the VM modem and I paid for someone to check my network settings and they told me the issues were caused by too many connections on my current modem. Hence my need to change.

tbh at the moment I just wanted to ask if VM will allow me a contract extension past the date we agreed which may then even allow me to do more checks on the setup ? VM have said No to an extension which puzzles me.

I don't suppose that one more voice saying the same things will make a difference, but I'll try.

WiFi 7 requires WiFi 7 devices to work correctly. Unless you have a very new phone or laptop you will not see the benefit.

The modems issued by VM are very basic and their WiFi doesn't fill a house, and VM issues or rents out WiFi extenders 'pods' to get speeds up to a basic 30Mbps. This is the VM guarantee.

All the experienced users on this forum set the VM Hub to modem mode and fit their own proper modem and extenders. Except for the few who have 5x Hubs who can't do this and complain bitterly.

You are causing yourself a great deal of trouble when you could have simply bought a proper modem and if necessary one or more extenders. You didn't need to pay for advice, there's always plenty of help on here if you choose to accept it.

Also I was told by a friend that some providers like EE may sell me a dedicated modem that replaces the VM one. I would like to explore this option too but I still need Vm to agree a contract extension :)

VM will only let you use VM-supplied hubs to connect to the VM network. As already stated though, you can put the hub in modem mode (excluding the Hub 5x) and use your own networking equipment .

VM's hubs in router mode are designed for basic domestic use and are built to a budget. If you want to connect multiple wireless devices you would be better off with your own networking equipment IMO.
