Speeds
Virgin insist I am getting the full 1gb speeds but various other speed checkers ( pc-cable-router fast port) show only about 2/3 upload speed. How is that possible which is correct?

It is very important to distinguish between the speed of the service to the VM Hub and the performance of your kit. Running a speed test only on your kit gives only part of the picture.
Check the Service Speed vs. the speed of your kit.
