Payment date confusion

Recently entered into an 18 month contract with £80 bill credit with virgin media and the first actual payment I need to make is suppose to be this month but when I look at my bill online it says the payment date is January 1st? That can't be right can it? I have absolutely no idea when the real payment date is even meant to be I set up direct debit so I don't need to worry about missing payments and it says all my payments will come out on the 8th of each month so I'm just getting massively conflicting dates.
