Is this a hoax

I received an email to say that my current discount was being extended for a further 12 months.

Has anyone else had this, is it real?

  • Apologies, I am currently on holiday in Bali! The email is genuine and I am getting a further 12 months with no extra contract

It looks genuine, it would take one of the Forum staff to verify it, they don't frequent the chatter sections though.  Maybe someone will move this thread into the Managing your account section of the Forum where it will get more attention from the Forum staff.

Yes I thought it looked genuine, however I went on the online chat to ask if it was and they seemed more interested in getting me to renew for 24 months.

I don't want to renew for 24 months if I don't have to.

How can I get someone to move the thread? Or is it just pot luck?

It's an early ploy to make you accept a new contract for another minimum term.

It says the discount is for 12 months, but the terms these days are 24 months, but can't see a mention of the price it would go to after 12 months.

Probably a new method to prevent people haggling for a new retentions deal over the phone, hoping that most people would accept the amount they pay now, and not go and look at new customer pricing or competition then haggle, only to then leave anyway when things don't go as planned.

A very good point re the 12 month discount / 24 month contract. However there is nothing on the email to say that it is subject to a new contract, and the implication is that it will just be applied, and it doesn't ask for any action.

If the poster is sent a revised contract and separately a Contract Information Sheet then look at them carefully. They both have to say what the price will rise to over the contract length, and if there is a significant rise after the first 12 months and the contract is for a longer period reject it [within 14 days makes it easier].

  • Was it real or false then? was this query solved, if so mark it solved

This is a new contract for 12 months on the same terms as current one which will end on 4 October.

It specifically says "no new contract". The distinction is important as a new contract needs to be agreed to by the customer, which this isn't asking for, and in particular a new 12 month contract will lead to penalties if the customer cancels before the 12 months is up [Virgin speak an "early disconnection fee"].

Virgin Media can't impose a contract without agreement. What they can do is say what the price without agreeing a new contract is which is what this appears to be, giving the same discount going forward. The existing contract is still in force, but having gone past the minimum term can be cancelled without penalty giving 30 days notice.

VM gotta compete in an increasingly competitive environment. Two letter competition is offering really juicy deals!  With Windows 10 on the way out and no upgrade path using current hardware, I am seriously considering going offline permanently; leaving my nephew the only person with a W11 computer online.

Microsoft/Big Tech/Govt  shenanigans is not helping me in my decision making.   Destroying your customer base isn't a good business strategy; neither are zero sum games.

Grabbing infinite amounts of dataz and blasting it all over the show doesn't bode well for a "secure" interwebs; just a data soup.  If govt wants this (anything quantifying as data) nonsense, why don't they make it law where everyone has a camera and a sub (electron) microscopic nuclear power station shoved up their backsides?
