*HELP* Trying to Cancel Early (Early cancellation fees)

Hi, My contract finishes on 11/10/2025, i have roughly 7 months left and i am trying to cancel my contract and i plan on moving to another provider like BT or Sky - For some reason almost NO ONE speaks fluent english or even knows basic english and are VERY unhelpful? Im currently on M125 bundle comes with tv box and telephone line which normally would be £73 as a whole HOWEVER i got a deal on this contract for just £33 a month! Now heres the issue;

My total if i stay on contract till it finishes would be £231

but if i cancel i have been quoted i would have to pay 78%-92% cancellation fee so an agent and myself have worked this out to be roughly £91.28 if i was to cancel today and leave virgin media. HOWEVER!!!

When i try to cancel the agents in virgin media online chat KEEP saying my early cancellation fee is £450.00 GBPS yes £450? Which is impossible staying on contract would only be £231 so how is it even possible for it to be £450 if i cancel early? It Makes NO SENSE again i explained to the advisors that theyve got it wrong they must be calculating £72 a month but thays not what i pay nor what i have ever paid i pay only £33 a month why on earth are they confused and trying to overcharge me? I noticed they dont speak english very well and dont even know the basics of english which is why they are so unhelpful

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME CANCEL MY CONTRACT ASAP FOR THE CORRECT EARLY CANCELLATION FEES? (AROUND £91.28) NOT (£450) its a complete joke!!!

No matter what they say, this is the public legal definition from Virgin Media:

    https://www.virginmedia.com/legal/fibre-optic-services-terms-conditions/early-disconnection-fees

VAT is charged on Early Disconnection Fees in accordance with HMRC requirements.

Thank you for your reply! But its not that VAT is max 20% if that , they are trying to say its £450! Impossible! i did have a english agent who quoted me the correct fee £91.28 but then i accidentally clicked off chat, after that i got non english speakers who kept working out the fee from £72 a month when i pay £33 a month lol very frustrating experience

That link gives the formula used to get to the amount range, and its the legal one as published. Takes a few mins but pretty straight forward. If they charge more, you complain, and take to small claims court if necessary, or ombudsman (VM is also a member of ISPA).

    Hi rajinderkaur197

I'm sorry but the early cancellation fee would be nowhere as low as £91.28. That IS a complete joke.

    As per https://prod.ctassets.virginmedia.com/uploads/edf_how_to_calculate_a705e94a09.pdf

Initially you would need to give 30 days notice  (£33) for your notice period.

That would leave 6 months early termination fees to pay for the remainder of the contract.

Since you are on a triple package (broadband, TV and phone) which has an offer price of £33 per month then the lowest charge would be 78 percent of £33 times for the remaining 6 months which is approx £25.74 * 6 = £154.44  PLUS £33 for the 30 day cancellation period which is approx £187.44.   Then add on 20 per cent VAT so an additional £37.40.   So the lowest early cancellation fee using the lowest percentage value would be in the region of £224.84

If VM used the highest precentage charge of 92 per cent you would be due to pay approx £30.36 * 6 = £182.16 Plus £33 for the 30 day cancellation period which is approx £215.16.  Then add on 20 per cent VAT so an additional £43.00.  So the lowest early cancellation fee using the highest percentage value would be in the region of £258.16

EDIT - Some ISP's are offering to pay off early termination fees (usually limited to a maximum of £100, although one provider is currently offering to pay up to £200 if you take out their TV and broadband service)  so do a google search for “credit for switching broadband"

Thank you for this reply, your right i just read and thought £91.28 was too cheap but thats what rhe ADVISOR told me in the live chat, and then another said £450 ish and then another advisor said £425? Ive replied back to someone called Kath from virgin media but im 50% sure they are not from the UK and i think theyl again quote wrong price and base it off the £72 or something, and try say £400 or £300 but il wait and see what they say, real price should be like you said something between £150ish -£270 im guessing, Thank you for your help! i appreciate it!

The other alternative would be not to cancel but to carry on paying until the contract is finished.  That way you know exactly how much you will be paying, and it will be spread out each month instead of in a lump sum.

A new connection from one of the Openreach suppliers will be a separate cable, so it won't disturb the VM connection at all. VM won't know you have it.
