Cancel renewal query

So I phoned to cancel my contract on the 9th of December, my contract was due to end on the 6th of January. The new services were to begin on the 8th or 9th of January. I was offered a deal which I accepted but it looks like openreach are going live in my area in a few weeks. The new deal is completely different from the old one as I'm getting rid of a lot of stuff I don't need, I'm basically going down to 1Gb broadband only, totally new contract I'd imagine. My question is does the 14 day cooling off period begin on the 9th of December when I made the initial call, which means I'm stuck with it, or does it begin when the new contract and services start in January?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi tricksterdude 👋

Welcome back to our Community Forums and thanks for your post.

The agreement start date is when your 14 day cooling period would start.

If you would like to cancel the contract, please call 0345 454 1111.

Let me know if I can help with anything else.

The 14 day ‘cooling off’ period only starts when the new service is up and running - the logic being that you get 14 days to try it out, is it what you expected, does it do what you wanted? If not, then you can cancel and revert to your previous arrangement.

Technically your old contract doesn’t end on 6th January, all that happens is that your ’18 month introductory discounts’ ends and you start paying the full amount, which will probably be a lot more expensive.

Can I assume, since you mention OpenReach, that you are, at least thinking about moving? It is a bit of a gamble.

Imagine that you don’t cancel the new contract with VM, fine you know what you will be paying and what the service is like but are locked into it until mid-2026. On the other hand, you do cancel the new contract, stick with your existing one, but be paying a lot more each month. And suppose that the OR provision is delayed, or any ISPs using it are delayed with getting everything sorted out,

What if you end up paying the non-discounted rate to VM for the next, six months, before an alternative is available and you can leave?

Like I said, bit of a gamble!
