Account fraud

I have received a debt collection letter about a virgin media account. I have never had an account. I did see a direct debit appear on my bank account and I cancelled this as it was fraudulently created. I cannot contact customer services because when I enter the account number quoted it states it is not recognised.  How do I get some help and find out if there is a genuine charge there .
