My Virgin Media IP Blocked on Blacklists – Causing Access Issues and Service Disruptions

I’m having a frustrating issue with my Virgin Media broadband, and I’m hoping someone here can help or offer advice. Virgin Media has assigned me a secondhand IP address that is flagged as a spam IP on the following blacklists:

  • RATS NoPtr
  • Spamhaus ZEN

This is causing me a ton of problems. Many websites and online resources I rely on are blocking access, and it’s seriously affecting both my personal and professional activities.

I urgently need one of the following: A new IP address or a replacement hub or a significant discount on my contract, as I’m paying for a service that’s being severely disrupted by a secondhand IP address with these issues.

What I’ve Tried:

  • Restarting my router to try to get a new IP which didn’t work
  • Contacting Virgin Media support, but so far, I haven’t received any meaningful help.

If anyone has dealt with a similar problem or has advice on how to escalate this with Virgin Media, I’d really appreciate your input.

Thanks in advance!

Mikhail

Placing the hub in modem mode issues a different IP address, however the router IP address won't change as that's fairly sticky.

Also follow Tim's advice from the following linked post

Thank you for taking your time to reply! Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me as my modem seems to be in IPv6 mode and there is no such an option for it. Here is a screenshot:

This is the first post of a new forum user and it is absolutely fabulous,
or do I mean it is utterly composed of ambiguity & total nonsense.

It's the second post. The first was 2 months ago with the same issue piggy backed onto a 12 month old post with the OP having a second hand IP address and wanting a new hub or discount.

I didn't want to make a noise and hoped the VirginMedia support would be able to address my issue seeing it right next to the post that they managed to fix. But no, it is not how it works for Virgin...

I like the reference to "a secondhand IP address".  Is he expecting to get a brand new, unused one?

Internet Service Providers like Virgin Media have a pool of IP addresses they assign to customers. These IP addresses are often reused — when one customer disconnects or resets their connection, the IP address is returned to the pool and may be assigned to another user.

The issue arises when an IP address previously assigned to someone else was flagged for spam or abuse and landed on public blacklists like RATS NoPtr or Spamhaus ZEN. If the ISP gives this "secondhand" IP to a new user without ensuring it's clean, the new user may face serious disruptions when websites block access due to its bad reputation.

So yes, it's totally possible (and frustrating) to inherit an "unlucky" IP address. That's why ISPs are usually responsible for assigning clean addresses or helping customers resolve blacklist issues when this occurs.

Hope this clears things up! 😊

  • Just use webmail and be glad you're not on a CGNAT IP address.

Now ideally I would have like to edit my above post, but that seems to no longer be a possibility in the 'brave new world' of VM’s community support.

I do wonder if this is the future of this forum and support, AI generated responses - I suggest it’s still a work in progress!
