Is this a scam

Hi.

I have received a text message saying

"The email address we have for you no longer exists. Sign in or register at virginmedia.com/myverginmedia to update your sign in details to a verified email."

I have logged into my account not using that that link and everything looks ok with no message out a outdated email address.

Can you verify if this is indeed a scam text message.

Thank you.

I assume "myverginmedia" is a typo and it should be "myvirginmedia".😉

That text may well be from VM because other people have reported receiving it. See here for example. https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Managing-Your-Account-Cable/No-Welcome-E-Mail

However the strange thing  is that all the people who have reported receiving  it have been new VM customers who had not yet set up their My Virgin Media Account (MVM) - usually because they had not received all the necessary details from VM. (I assume the "account" you checked was your current live MVM broadband account not an existing VM email account set up under an old VM broadband account?)

The Forum Team (VM staff who support this forum) are best placed to help you with this and one of them will contact you via this forum thread either today or tomorrow.

In the meantime don't post any details of your account on the forum.

  • Hello Davros64

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

We would never send a text message advising anything mentioned above.

If you still have the message can you please forward it to the following number 7726.

This is advised across all mobile providers and is explained here

    Sorry that was a typo.

Can't seem to be able to forward the message for some reason.

At the top of the message it says VirginMedia and not a phone number, does this mean it is genuine.

Absolutely not. Scammers will go to considerable lengths to make their texts or emails look genuine.

It's the same with telephone calls. Scammers can spoof (fake) the telephone number that appears in your caller display. If they spoof a number that you already have in your contacts list then the call will appear to come from your contact.

I can't work out how to send this to 7726, there is no copy anything like what is in the video.

Will have to just use the Block and Report Spam option.

    Thanks for your help though.

Hey Davross64, thank you for reaching out and I am sorry to hear you are experiencing some texting problems.

What was the number sorry, I will take note of it?

Think that may have been the problem.

There was no number, it just said VirginMedia and long pressing on it never gave a forwarding option.

Thank you, I will take note of this.

Normally  it would have a header and banner from us.

      Have you had anymore recently?

      Okay no worries.

Is it still registered on your end of the MyVM app?

      Kind regards,
      Ilyas.

Well i have changed my email address to a 3rd party one and now can't use Outlook or Mail on my PC.

It seems i have to generate a new password for Outlook, but it keeps failing.

Really wish i had not bothered.

      Hi Davros64,

Thanks for coming back to us on the community.

We can see you're already in a private message with our team and this has been raised with the relevant team.

We'll leave this with them to avoid multiple agents working on the same thing 🙂 They will be in touch with you when there is an update.

      Thanks,

    Just to end this.

I have given up on trying to get a generated password for outlook and have moved over to gmail for everything.

It has been a hard slog changing over, but it's done now.

As i said before, i wish i had not bothered changing my email address in the first place.
