Can Device Information Be Leeched From Outside?

Hi. Something I have always wondered. I felt, like why not ask it here. Here goes. If device information such as MAC address and such can be stored in the router, could some vagabond reach into the green hubs (large street furniture street boxes) and extract that information from them?

Thanks!

  • What is the actual concern here? Do you fear that a rogue actor will somehow hack the local VM cabinet with a view to launching a DOS attack on one of your devices? If so what would be the motivation? If you are particularly security conscious what measures have you put in place to protect your network and devices?

To access a CATV / DOCSIS network you don't need to access a street cabinet, just attach to a VM socket at any home in the street however . . .

. . . the DOCSIS internet transmission between VM Hubs & VM's Data Centre is encrypted in both directions, to ensure customer data can not be intercepted or modified.

No. And even if they could it would be of no use to them.

On here, they usually censor and remove MAC addresses, for some reason. Now some time ago, and we are talking over a decade, knowing the MAC address of a hub could, potentially, allow someone to clone it and get ‘free’ internet service - those days are long gone. But still I suppose there is some long obsolete instruction to the forum staff to delete MAC addresses as personally identifiable info (hint: it isn’t)
