wifi network not showing when connecting to laptop

Hi,

I am posting a question for my elderly father who yesterday had Virgin Media installed and is trying to connect his laptop to his VM WiFi for the first time.  He was previously with BT and his laptop connected fine.

For some reason he cannot see his VM WiFi showing on the list of available Networks.  There are multiple other networks showing but not his. I'm not sure whether purchasing an ethernet cable would solve this but he prefers to use his laptop upstairs whereas his router has been set up downstairs next to his living room TV.

Strangely when I tried on my IPhone I connected to his VM Wifi instantly.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We have a Hub 3, I've not found any kit that does not work over Wi-Fi.

Usually the Wi-Fi issues are a Hub 5 which is Wi-Fi 6 not being seen by an older laptop that has a Wi-Fi 4 2.4GHz single band Wi-Fi adaptor.   Is this the situation ?

You mentioned "He has tried a ethernet wired connection to the Hub" but did not say if the laptop worked over the ethernet cable i.e. was able to access the internet.

The ethernet wired connection from laptop to hub automatically connected to EE unsecure Wifi where he could access the internet, but wouldn’t that be unwise to use being an unsecure network?   I guess the problem lies with the laptop being an older model and the only solution is a new laptop unless anyone has a solution?   Thanks

It is unconfirmed which VM Hub is involved.

However usually a current dual band USB Wi-Fi adaptor works with a Hub 5.

Please advice Make and Model of the Laptop and which Hub is he using?   It could be a mismatch of Wifi hardware and perhaps a cheap Wifi Access Point may solve the issue.

Thanks for your reply.  My dad has a Toshiba Satelite E1 Vision laptop, and he’s not sure which Hub he has been provided with but it was newly installed on wednesday with his tv, broadband and sky sports package. I’m guessing it would be Hub 3 or Hub 5.  He had previously been with BT broadband and had no issues connecting to their Wifi.
He has tried a ethernet wired connection to the Hub and still can’t see his VM network, but can see a EE Wifi unsecured network.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to respond.   I have a couple of other suggestions to try but if all else fails I will advise him to purchase a better router.  thanks
