Gmail in Outlook not working

I recently moved over to Virgin Media from Sky. I use Outlook on a Macbook to check multiple email addresses including Hotmail and Gmail accounts. Since moving to Virgin Media, I am unable to send and receive using the Gmail accounts.

Historically the mail server settings have been Googles (imap.gmail.com, Incoming 993, Outgoing 465). These have worked regardless of how I am connected to the internet. All of the various Google authentications have been clicked, checked and all worked fine. The only change is my home internet now being Virgin Media.

If I connect to a different network or Hotspot to my phone, it all works fine.

I read some support info about using imap.virginmedia.com but surely this won't work when I'm on a network that isn't Virgin.

How do I fix this? Help!!

A screen shot of the error messages displayed by Outlook would help.

  • Hi,

I tried turning off Virus Protection as well, restarted router, still no difference. Unfortunately the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) have already been added to Outlook so no luck there either.

It feels like Virgin is blocking something somewhere, but only for Gmail, not for Hotmail. Just can't figure out what

It's nut's, to check my email I currently have to disconnect from the fibre connection and hotspot to my iPhone.

I haven't got any particular suggestions to resolve your issue but felt it worth posting to say that I have no problems accessing Gmail and Hotmail, MSN and outlook email addresses using MS Outlook on my VM connection.

  • So I couldn't follow the exact instructions, not sure why but the exact options you suggested weren't available. This was the closest I could find...

    Went to virginmedia.com

My Account -> Sign in to My Virgin Media -> Scroll down to Account Settings (or select same fro the menu) -> Online Security -> Essential Security -> Switch off Parental Controls

Within the "Parental Controls" section, there was a list of categories to block, but I switched the whole feature off. I checked that no websites are blocked and no timers in place as well.

I then rebooted. Sadly it hasn't fixed the issue.

Within "Essential Security", there's also a Virus Protection" feature that is currently switched on. Is it possible that Web Safe and Child Safe are now known as Virus Protection and Parental Controls respectively?

    Thanks

You should look into that to see if that's a factor.

You could try getting a different IP number in case your number is  blacklisted somewhere

If you switch off your router for a half hour to an hour and then reboot it, you should get a different number.

      You could try

      On your Mac:

      • System Settings → Network → Wi‑Fi → Details → DNS Add either:

      Cloudflare:

      • 1.1.1.1
      • 1.0.0.1

      Google DNS:

      • 8.8.8.8
      • 8.8.4.4

      Restart Outlook.

  • Turn off Virgin Media Web Safe

Log into your Virgin Media account → Internet Security → turn off:

    • Web Safe
    • Child Safe

    Then reboot your router.

This alone fixes the issue for many users.
