Gmail in Outlook not working

I recently moved over to Virgin Media from Sky. I use Outlook on a Macbook to check multiple email addresses including Hotmail and Gmail accounts. Since moving to Virgin Media, I am unable to send and receive using the Gmail accounts.

Historically the mail server settings have been Googles (imap.gmail.com, Incoming 993, Outgoing 465). These have worked regardless of how I am connected to the internet. All of the various Google authentications have been clicked, checked and all worked fine. The only change is my home internet now being Virgin Media.

If I connect to a different network or Hotspot to my phone, it all works fine.

I read some support info about using imap.virginmedia.com but surely this won't work when I'm on a network that isn't Virgin.

How do I fix this? Help!!

Turn off Virgin Media Web Safe

Log into your Virgin Media account → Internet Security → turn off:

    • Web Safe
    • Child Safe

    Then reboot your router.

This alone fixes the issue for many users.

  • So I couldn't follow the exact instructions, not sure why but the exact options you suggested weren't available. This was the closest I could find...

    Went to virginmedia.com

My Account -> Sign in to My Virgin Media -> Scroll down to Account Settings (or select same fro the menu) -> Online Security -> Essential Security -> Switch off Parental Controls

Within the "Parental Controls" section, there was a list of categories to block, but I switched the whole feature off. I checked that no websites are blocked and no timers in place as well.

I then rebooted. Sadly it hasn't fixed the issue.

Within "Essential Security", there's also a Virus Protection" feature that is currently switched on. Is it possible that Web Safe and Child Safe are now known as Virus Protection and Parental Controls respectively?

    Thanks

      You could try

      On your Mac:

      • System Settings → Network → Wi‑Fi → Details → DNS Add either:

      Cloudflare:

      • 1.1.1.1
      • 1.0.0.1

      Google DNS:

      • 8.8.8.8
      • 8.8.4.4

      Restart Outlook.

You should look into that to see if that's a factor.

You could try getting a different IP number in case your number is  blacklisted somewhere

If you switch off your router for a half hour to an hour and then reboot it, you should get a different number.

  • Hi,

I tried turning off Virus Protection as well, restarted router, still no difference. Unfortunately the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) have already been added to Outlook so no luck there either.

It feels like Virgin is blocking something somewhere, but only for Gmail, not for Hotmail. Just can't figure out what

It's nut's, to check my email I currently have to disconnect from the fibre connection and hotspot to my iPhone.

I haven't got any particular suggestions to resolve your issue but felt it worth posting to say that I have no problems accessing Gmail and Hotmail, MSN and outlook email addresses using MS Outlook on my VM connection.

What mail servers and ports are you using? Historically I've used imap.gmail.com as the incoming and outgoing servers, and then for ports Incoming 993, Outgoing 465.

Have you got any specific security settings?

Sorry, just trying to look for anything that might sort the issue.

A screen shot of the error messages displayed by Outlook would help.

  • What's strange is that there is no error message. Everything looks like it should be working properly but the two Gmail accounts simply never sync, they just sit there...

As soon as I jump onto a different internet connection, it instantly syncs. Genuinely not sure what else to try!

Earlier on, Buffer6 suggested you change your DNS settings

Gmail in Outlook not working | Virgin Media Community - 5687585

and in your follow up post you mention ' ... the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) have already been added to Outlook'

Was that a typo and where did you apply the Google DNS settings?

Turning off parental controls should have bypassed any restrictions but changing VM's filtering is notoriously unreliable through the web interface. Manually entering network DNS settings to the Mac should bypass it reliably.

Yep, you're 100% correct, type.. DNS settings were already applied to the network settings, not to Outlook. I've tried quite a few other networks since first posting here and literally every other network is fine, phone hotspot, work wifi, gym wifi, neighbours wifi! The only thing I haven't tried is someone elses VM network.

I've logged an IT ticket with Virgin Media... so will wait and see if that reveals anything.
