While I was there I noticed he had sky fibre. The router didn't have any model number but was disappointed that there were only 4 LAN ports, and no uplink , so technically you only have 3 ports . Is this common with ISPs these days? The other port connects to the ONT box. Do SKY have ethernet backhaul WiFi boosters? Are they free? Unfortunately I told him to have a minimum of 3 cat 6 cables for each TV, and he only did one. I also told him to install RG6 cable in case he decides just to have regular digital TV, however the newest Samsung have about 200 free channels I noticed. Re: Burglar Alarm signal on Hub 5 Get your installer to hardwire the connection. Thrives are getting very clever and using WiFi jammers. If someone really wanted to cause havoc they could cut the cable that enters the property. Perhaps put some decoy cable to mask the real one? Re: Cable Cut This is what's wrong with the country. Too many planning consultants and red tape. Personally if this was me I would just do it myself and bill virgin. Re: Problem with WiFi Pods I had the insight to use ethernet cable back in 2000 when I did my extension. That was back in the days when I got my first Pipex ADSL connection. In those days my ethernet cable was used to carry a BT phone line to the rooms as I had the insight to figure that RJ11 would not be needed in the future and I would be repurposing the cat 5e cable. I also installed co-ax at the same time, and now my VM boxes uses that coax and the cat 5e easily gives a gig transfer. I'm sure with time, things will be fibre based, with a quantum box of some description, maybe just maybe ... Re: Problem with WiFi Pods The only way to use Pods is to have ethernet backhaul. This is how it's done in business, hotels, public places etc etc. Anything else is just false and leads to increased latency. Fibre optic cable damaged by a grabber truck My brother has a strange incident happen. He is in the middle of renovating his property, and on Christmas day, he received a very irate message from his neighbour saying that a grab truck had cut his internet. My brother called community fibre on behalf of the neighbour and they could see there was a fault with the line, and they would get someone out to fix it ASAP. Question is, in this situation, anything on the outside of the ONT is the responsibility of the ISP? I note virgin done charge for faults where a line has been cut by a mower etc. If this is fixed at no fee for the neighbour then my brother will just send a small gift as a gesture of good will, otherwise he will reimburse the neighbour and deduct it from the builder. What does the group think? Re: House refurb and connectivity So the stream boxes cannot record via the cloud? One of the best bits about the boxes whether that be skyQ or V 360 is that the recordings are local. You can skip the ads. With things going on demand, no such luck. House refurb and connectivity My brother is getting his house refurbed. He has a choice of VM , Sky or community Fibre. Do VM use coax for the TV boxes still? I have a reel of the VM cable that he can use to place it the areas where the TVs are so he's not limiting his options. I have also advised he runs 2 pairs of Cat6 as well. Also if he gets sky Q he could still use the coax too. Have things moved on? Virgin pure fibre is not available. Cheers. Re: Ordering a WIFI Pod The VM pods are only good if you have ethernet and want to extend the range. My hub is in the loft and prior to the pod signal was ok downstairs. Connecting the pod to ethernet gives very good signal. Any mesh system relies on piggybacking off a wireless signal which will never be as good as a hard wired solution.
