Hub3 in Modem mode but acting as a router

I have a Hub3 set to modem mode.  It is directly connected to a wired Draytek 2927 router.

If, in Mac terminal, I enter trace route 8.8.8.8, I get a response of:

  1. my local lan 192.168.nnn.nnn - The 2927
  2. then 10.112.nnn.nnn - I assume this must be the Hub3 ??
  3. then sgyl-core-2a-ae79-650.network.virginmedia.net 81.97.nnn.nnn

My network mostly functions fine but I have some major problems because of the 2 daisy-chained routers in the network.   Synology does not like it.   I believe the hub in modem mode should render it "network dumb" or transparent at least.

Has anyone any experience or, better, a remedy for this cos it's been doing my head in for some time?

I have found no solutions out there or on this forum.   Many thanks in advance.

10. is VM WAN gateway router (not hub) which is fine

Hmmm... Interesting.  Thanks for the pointer.

Maybe my Synology NAS has lost the plot cos it believes there are 2 routers in series.  It tries to write NAT rules to the router and it thinks it was successful but it sure isn't updating my Draytek 2927.

I'll close this and try a post on the Synology forum.

There is no other router in my network.

I have a 2927 and used it with both a Hub3 and 5 in modem mode without any problems.

10.122.*.* is not a WAN address, could be within VMs private address space. To find your WAN  address then do a watsmyip lookup. What colour is the LED on the hub3?

Thanks Mainframe guy I do know ebcdic when I see it 😉   BAL is my fave language too.  I do like Swift tho'

The light is Pink as it should be - Green for not ready, red for all good right. - Who decided that?  Uurgh.

And the router WAN light is on and happy.

My router resolves the 77 VM WAN address just fine.  It's really my Synology box that has issues and I've started a thread there as I'm not sure it is doing what it should.  I suspect the 10.112.*.* is indeed outboard from the Router and in the VM camp, but I'm starting to see that as a red herring.  Access is good and fast and I can resolve my domain and subdomains to the router.

I appreciate your helpful pointers.

10.122.*.*is the CMTS and the next is one of the core routers connected to the CMTS.

Ah.. Thanks for clearing that up.

I suspect something in my network has got itself into a fankle.
Thank all round and we'll go for. closure on this one.

Got things working.  No changes to the VM Hub ... as expected.

Moved DNS from Domain provider (123Reg) to FreeDNS.  Just saying...

Thanks for the pointers.
