Simple question. I have one small deadspot at home and need a single pod. £8 per month forever seems excessive for such a small requirement. Can I not simply buy one pod? And no I am not on an applicable tariff.

No, you cannot buy a Pod, only rent unless you are on a top tier or a VOLT customer.
This should do the same job, costs just over roughly 5 months Pod rental and is yours to keep - Buy TP-Link AC1750 Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender & Booster | Wi-Fi boosters | Argos

Hi Drewpy100uk,
Thanks for taking the time to contact us via the Community. It's lovely having you on board with us in the Forums. ⭐
We're sorry to hear you've been having an issue with your WiFi connection and need something extra to help.
The £8 per month doesn't only cover the rental of the Pod, it also provides you with the WiFi Max service. This means you get a guaranteed 30MB speed via WiFi in each room of the property. Should you get less than this, we will provide up to 3 WiFi Pods, an engineer visit and a one off £100 credit if things still aren't up to scratch. You can read more about this here.
If you wish to purchase a third party option, you are within your right to do this however if there are any connection issues, we're unable to support the equipment.
If after having a read through the information regarding WiFi Max you wish to add it, let us know and we can help further.
Many thanks,
