Hub 5x a bit limited

Finding the Hub 5x a bit limiting - no modem only option, stuck with the 192.168.0.x network, no VPN functionality etc.

Anyone know if it can be replaced with a 3rd party unit ? Really looking for a unit i can flick into modem mode and then fit a pfsense firewall behind the router., Had a look around but cannot seem to find anything with the hub 5x fibre connection (XGS-PON) which looks like a fibre LC type connector but instead of two ends it just has the one.

Yup VM might as well make it a modem mode then a router mode where VM wants no part in port forwarding

You're stuck with the 5x. There's no way to replace it.

The is a way, use WAS-110. I have successfully ditched hub 5x which is now sitting on the bottom of the junk drawer

Yes, you are right, but, honestly do you think that the hoops you need to jump through, the technical knowledge you need to implement it, plus the cost, is viable for the vast, vast majority of VM customers? Even those who are happy to put a hub into modem mode and connect their own router, might well baulk at do this, it’s a quite considerable step up.

So I think that ‘jpeg1' wasn’t wrong, in general, for the vast, vast, vast majority of customers, then, yes, there is no alternative to the 5x.

I have absolutely no intention of posting any details about how to do this, it’s quite understandable that the mods would remove such, anyone doing this would absolutely be in breach of the T’s and C’s which they agreed to; however it’s not illegal, you aren’t getting anything you aren’t paying for.

I see my link to the relevant clip in YouTube was silently deleted.

Was that the YouTube video that broadly addresses the subject of "replacing the hub 5x" and is about 32 minutes in length?

Well then VM give us modem mode!

we can either PM how to or tell the OP to cancel VM which do you want to delete?

Modem mode does exist and does work, but it is limited to the 1gbe ports on the back of the hub 5x which if you have speeds up to 1gb is fine. It does not work on the 10gbe port so if like me you have the 2gb service it’s not suitable.

there are ways to bypass the hub 5x and use your own router but that’s not something that we can openly discuss in detail here and certainly is not for the average user.

I didn’t have modem mode even as an option on my hub 5x I then performed a factory reset and the option appeared. It worked right away on the yellow ports with no special config but nothing I tried would work on the e 10gbe port worked (cloning Mac, setting various vlans, dhcp options, hard coding the ip that was handed out on the other ports etc).

what you are talking about is above normal usage so if you want to look into it you may want to google “virgin media hub 5x WAS-110” there’s a guide and a link to a discord were you can do what your looking for but it’s not supported or discussed in detail on this forum.

Given the above, we are not seeing language or screen shots in posts to confirm customers are currently operating their Hub 5x in modem mode and it is successful as a continuous mode of operation.
