Hub 5 and Modem mode

I'm a tad confused. On the surface, as I want to use a Mesh system, setting the Hub 5 in modem mode would be a piece of cake. That was until I read numerous posts saying it had been disabled or there was a problem. Of course I checked the official VM advice and saw this -

How do I put a Virgin Media Hub into modem and router mode?

How to turn on modem mode on the Virgin Media Hub 3, 4 or 5* and Super Hub 1, 2 or 2AC

I noticed the * and found this -

*Not currently available for Hub 5x

Can anyone say what this means because to me this indicates modem mode for the Hub 5 is NOT available.

  • I can't be sure that the Hub 5 supports modem mode (I presume it does) but I do believe the Hub 5x is not the same as the Hub 5 - see THIS link

The Hub 5x is for full fibre connections - where there is a fibre to the property, not a coax - what type of cable comes into your house?

  • I'm pretty certain that I don't have a full fibre connection since the cable to my home is the same one used over 10 years ago by NTL, or it could have been Telewest, after they bought Cable London. I may just have a bash and see what happens!

  • Thanks for confirming this. Once I heard that Hub5* meant full fibre cable I was pretty certain I'd be OK.
