I have been hacked as all my contacts received suspicious emails from me. The password was reset on my Virgin email account and although I can log into my Virgin Media account to receive emails I cannot log in with the same password on my phone or tablet apps or on my laptop through a Thunderbird email account. They will not recognise the password. Virgin have reset it several times now and I am getting nowhere but going round in circles. Any advice would be appreciated.

VM changed the security settings around a year or so ago. Having changed the My VM account password for the email address concerned you will need to go to the My VM account settings page and generate an app password for use with email clients.

Thank you for your help. I have tried to generate an app password but I need to supply a new email account as my current one ends in ntlworld.com. Am I right in thinking I now have no alternative but to lose this email address due to VMs change in security settings in 2022? Many thanks

No you are not right. VM require a third party email address to be set as the sign in username for the account. This does not stop the underlying email address from working. It will continue as before but will have two username/password combinations. For VM webmail and My Virgin media you will need to sign in with the third party email address and the VM account password. For email client access you will need to use the original email address as the username together with the generated app password.
