Rapidly rowing in the opposite direction, Telcos / ISPs are desperate to sell contracts with complex multi service bundles that are super hard / impossible to migrate from one provider to the next especially when the technology changes or the customer premise required a new physical connection that takes week / months or in some cases is never installed.
The simplest thing in the world should to port a land line from one telco the another, try it with VM to a VOIP provider, you will not believe how much VM will drag their feet for many many months and / or attempt to levy early termination fees when one could just allocate a new phone number to the existing package.
