U&Gold Catch Up wrong aspect ratio

Looking at U&Gold, and programmes such as Dad's Army and Porridge.

The live channel is correct and is showing them in 4:3 aspect ratio, and the box switches correctly.

Virgin's catch up for U&Gold is currently incorrectly stretching the picture and showing them as 16:9.

There are versions of Dad's Army on both iPlayer and ITVX which are correctly displayed, albeit in a 16:9 picture with black pillarbox bars down each side.

  • Hey Richardr1, thank you for reaching out and we are sorry to hear about the picture issue.

We have no control over this sorry, the broadcaster controls this.

You can change the settings on your box.

Hi-de-Hi is also wrong but Fawlty Towers is correct. The reason is that live and catch-up content are delivered differently. Live is more robust with the AFD flags but catch-up can be less so, and if VM gets catch-up without embedded pillarboxing, and the aspect metadata is missing or incorrect, the box will stretch the image to fill 16:9.

It's also possible, but less likely I think, that VM is getting the catch-up correctly formatted but not honouring the ratio flags and so the box wrongly stretches the content to 16:9.
