"SMTP Network or Protocol Error sending mail"

Hi All;

For years I was with UPC for Broadband.

My email package was with "Indigo" thus my eamil was ********@indigo.ie

I have been with Virgin Media now for some time. but when I try to send email from my indigo.ie acct , I get the following error ...

"08:24:39.107: --- 26 May 2025, 8:24:39.107 ---
08:24:39.107: Connect to 'smtp.upcmail.ie', timeout 15 seconds.
08:24:39.145: 2: Bad address "smtp.upcmail.ie"

I'm not tech savvy at all, but am assuming I need to change the "Outgoing" details in my settings so it will run on VirginMedia, the only problem I have, is I have no idea which settings to make it

I am receiving email but am unable to send

Any help would be very much appreciated guys

Many thanks

Michael

If you are in Ireland, you'll need to contact

    https://www.virginmedia.ie/customer-support/

as this forum is for UK customers (and is a different VM company).

The email server settings for any email account are dictated by the email provider not the broadband service that you use to access the email account.

The Virgin Media email server settings apply to the various VM email domains, (virginmedia, com, ntlworld.com etc), so are just for people using VM email accounts.

You need to contact the provider of the indigo.ie email service to obtain the correct settings to use in your email app or client.

I have searched online for that information and it does not seem to be readily available which makes me wonder whether there are some limitations on the use of Indigo.ie email accounts.

Normally you should still be able to use the same settings that you used when you used UPC broadband but as I said, I do wonder whether there are limitations to the Indigo.ie service.

The main reason I post on this forum is because I love a challenge.

You mentioned that you were with UPC  but they became  Sunrise Communications who like Virgin Media are now part of the Liberty Global corporation.

However, I have done more digging and it seems that Indigo.ie  email accounts are / were provided by the the Irish ISP EIR rather than Virgin Media.IE.

Sadly for you,  I see that EIR's Indigo.ie  email service has the limitation that the ability to send emails via an email client or app is only available to EIR broadband customers.

If you do not have EIR broadband then it seems that your only option is to send your Indigo.ie emails via EIR's webmail service and that is a "paid for" service.

I found the EIR  email server details here   https://www.eir.ie/helpandsupport/webmail/help/   click on  "External client setting Outlook/WindowsMail/AppleMail)" on that page  to see the full settings:

    Incoming Settings
    •    Incoming Server: webmail.eircom.net
    •    Port: 995
    •    Authentication: Password (Normal)
    •    SSL/TLS (Security): SSL
    Outgoing (SMTP) Server Settings
    •    Outgoing (SMTP) Server: mail1.eircom.net (eir broadband customers only)
    •    Port: 25
    •    Authentication: None
    •    SSL/TLS: None

But............note the part in brackets in the SMTP line:

    • Outgoing (SMTP) Server: mail1.eircom.net (eir broadband customers only)

The above infmation is what I have been able to find but obviuosly, you must know exactly who originally provided your Indigo.ie email account.  You do really need to talk to them (not VM in the UK) to resolve your email problem.

      Oh Gosh.

Many thanks for this,  It would appear I am in trouble, as I do not have an EIR broadband package

OK look this is important, you say you have issues sending email, what about receiving? Now if you can receive emails, then what you need to do is to assume that the @indigo.ie is gong  to vaporise sometime soon, but you have a window to spin up a new email address, gmail, outlook, whatever and shift your accounts across to it.

What I mean is that some companies, if you change email address, insist on sending a verification message to the old address with some codes in it; while you can still receive emails on that address, you have then opportunity to do this.

Start now, you don't know how long you have.
